I wasn't around when "owns9" was making the barf headlines, but ended up looking for his story and video after it was referenced in some thread. I'm guessing that's the video of when he had a nasty crash?
Let me embed that for you:

I do.
I was just talking about this on my FB few days ago.

I remember one sunny day in 00' I was riding my SV650 with a friend that was slower up hwy9.
I had to keep waiting for him. At one point halfway down a straight I slowed down again and started looking back waiting for my friend to show up. When suddenly this bike just appeared very fast around the corner. In my mind I was like "what the hell where did he find that speed!?" Then the bike flew past me and disappeared around the next corner.
It was Lavelle!
Later I saw him at "4corners" and told him how impressed I was by his speed. He modestly said "fast is relative, there will always be people faster and slower than you. Important thing is to enjoy your ride"

I became a regular on 9 after that and that summer and the next three where an amazing experience in many ways on many levels.
Looking back I'm glad I survived mostly unscathed those crazy riding years. Scott wasn't so fortunate.
A lot of people on barf fit that clishee "slower than me you are a newb squid, faster than me you are a antisocial maniac" and because of that Scott came to represent a villain in barf culture. I got to know him pretty well over the years and I can tell you he was just a bike mad guy with a bit more talent than the average joe who loved riding hwy9.
That's all.

Corb, Karbon, and Hooli replied to this post. That says everything.

LaVelle was as fast as anyone, maybe not quite as there as Sean Crane, but you get my point. He might have been. May there be others who push these limits.

For all you noobs, please scrub your chicken strips until they're crunchy.

It's obvious this will become a divisive thread.
I never knew Scott and certainly never rode with him but he was the hot topic when I first began sniffing around this board.
What I was able to discern was most likely an oversimplification of his *legacy* but is probably pretty close to the truth.
1)He was an above average rider.
2)He knew that road better than most.
3)He was willing to take that extra chance that most of us wont.
4)His street abilities did not translate equally to the track.
4)The odds we are all aware of finally caught up with him.
5)In many ways he was not that much different than the rest of us.

I was not on BARF during this period but probably was passed by him on the road. I did watch all of his videos on YouTube when started posting them and I can see the bravado and how he would be a lightening rod. Looking at from this distance I think his biggest crime, was that he didn't graduate to the track. Would probably still be riding and be faster for it.

Something happened because there is almost no one fast on 9 anymore. I am guessing as more track schools and days are available now people are more likely to take it to the track. Which is good for everyone.

Scott should have been born in Ireland. Joey Dunlop and Guy Martin weren't that good at racetrack riding either. :)

Hyper hoñorary
Why you got to hate? Few things are worst to someone passionate about the sport than having to give it up.
Isn't that enough?

Not hating. Giving up something you love because you have no self control is another topic.

Like theres a lot to unpack when it comes to understanding a persons's mindset in regards to participating in high risk activities.

The guy raced and was "marginal" as someone pointed out, but how does that translate to wanting and claiming ownership and dominance of a public road by chasing slower riders and random squids?

This thread reminded me of the shy kid that used to show up at 4 corners on his Aprilia rs50 w/ a rm 250 engine shoved in it in the early 00's.
His name was Ricky Corey.

No knowledge other than what I've read here; didn't watch the video.

Did he bin it and get seriously hurt and hang it up?

Rolls with it...
Like a cold sore, this pops up every now and then, and you might feel a tinge guilty if you actually spread it... :laughing
