Hoolis' california thread sparks a follow up question.

What state would you live in if california wasn't an option and why?
I've lived here the majority of my life so I have nothing to offer. :p

yeah Hawaii would top my list. The beach, the girls, the sun, the girls, and of course the girls.

Tennesee has some amazing roads, and the plant life is almost tropical looking. Nashville is more cosmopolitan than you would think, and Memphis is a pretty interesting city.

Missouri is another state that has some decent MC roads. But being the home of John Ashcroft, it is scocially retarded. I was born there, and it wasn't until I was 19 that realized I was allowed to leave(I stole that joke).

I was an Air Force brat, and I've been to a lot of places. CA is starting to seriously suck ass, the only thing is has going for it now is weather. But 30 years ago, this place was the best in the world.

I'm thinking New Zealand.

i would love to see New Zealand

personally, if i could manage it i would move every few years....but if i had to live in one place for good i think it would be someplace in europe, because i could go to a bunch of other places very easily because of how close they are together. maybe someplace on the Med.

I agree. Well, except I don't have any (non-immediate) family here within a 5000 miles radius.

Now I just gotta get Raytheon to hire me..

I would go back and apply for my dual-citizenship, and buy some land.

Then sit on a beach for the rest of my life.

Or start a dirt-bike/quad rental business on the beach.

someday.

Georgia or one of the southern states. Have lots of relatives down there. Humidity doesn't bother me and Jamaica isn't that far away. ;) Thing is, anywhere else you go, can't lanesplit legally... :cry

Don't know about Florida, too many hurricanes and straight roads... :zzz

Let's see. Here, we have the coast about an hour away. Likewise with the Mountain resorts for skiers/snowboarders. An abundance of twisties all around, relatively deserted. Cultural amenities aren't bad, although not the same scope as Bay area.
Affordable housing--especially on this (Washington) side of the border. Median housng price approx. $130K with plenty of decent older 900-1200 sg. ft. examples between $85-$110K.

The only real drawback is the ubitiquous cloudiness between November and May. However it rains a let less than most people are led to believe.

I already defected to Fernley, NV and I LOVE living here (but Jenna and I are introverted, so living in the middle of the desert does not bring any hardship).

Nevada has no income tax and no business tax. The economy here is booming. Housing is still cheap (compared to the Bay Area) but all the escapees from CA are gradually driving up the prices.

I think this is definitely the best part of Nevada. Las Vegas is a fun place to visit, but Fernley is also filling up with defectors from Las Vegas.

The weather here is great! Mid-to-high 80s or low 90s in the summer, 40s to high 50s in winter, close to snow (actually snows here sometimes, enough to be fun, not enough to be a pain). Hiking, swimming, kayaking. Dirt biking (I just open my garage door and kick start the bike and I'm off onto hundreds of miles of trails). In Fernley there's a roadracing course (Reno-Fernley) and a motocross track.

Oh, we also have 5 acres, one for every horse we own. Dogs run with me every day without leashes (through the desert). No poop bags required: doggy poop dries up and blows away within a couple of days (if the coyotes don't eat it first) and since we're the only ones out here it's not like someone's going to tread in it.

This might be the best place I've lived. The rest of the list includes:

Sydney, Australia
London, UK
Grenoble, France (down south in the French alps)
Belmont, Bay Area, CA.

That's in order. For me (and just my own opinion) the Bay Area was the worst place I've lived! I'm not saying it was bad at all, just those other places had other qualities that edged it out.

I just got back

From a month long drive/ride through the lower half of the country 8 months in florida and a year in Mi but during all of this got to see alot of other area's of the country. Haven't been abroad so can't compare but I'm never gonna live anywhere besides the bay area again if I can help it. All I ever used to do before I left was complain about how backwards and fucked up this place was and how I couldn't wait to get out but now I know better. This place rocks and if I ever did move again it would be to a less populated part of the state where I could come back out to the city when I felt like it. Anyone thinking about moving away. Think real hard about all the things that you may or may not be taking for granted right now and picture yourself without those things cause I couldn't deal with it once I left and wasn't really as happy as I should have been.

Thank you Lisa for being a light in my darkness:rose
