If Anyone Was Thinking Of Adopting A Grey Hound...

My sister had one. Went with them to the dog park and it was amazing how he ran circles around the other dogs

My neighbor had adopted a grey hound after it retired. Dog didn't want to do anything other than relax and look out the window.

Curiously speaking, what is cruel about dog racing?

Always liked Greyhounds, never met one that wasn’t mellow

I think it has more to do with the way they are treated once they aren't able to race anymore. Rescues can only save so many, so once they can't compete or aren't good enough, they are euthanized. It's a business, pure and simple. Can't make money, no need to keep paying for them. I know that's why I voted to end it.

I'm surprised they don't breed them like they do race horses.

Kinda think a better solution would be laws against euthanizing the dogs after they stop competing.

Ummm, ywere you aware that an unacceptable number of former and failed race horsies go to slaughter?

The animal insustry is pretty lacking in morals. Everything, even things with beating hearts, are disposable. Decades ago I worked a lot with horse rescue. Talk about PTSD in an animal.

:cry

and your right, no number is acceptable.

Thanks for that insight.
I googled greyhound racing. Efforts to make them run in a straight line failed. They had success with an oval or round of track using live rabbits for a lure. The winning dog typically kill the rabbit. Then some guy invented the fake lure to lead the race, for the welfare of the rabbits. I found that amusing since the Welfare of the dog was of no concerns.

I like Greyhounds. I really like the Italian Greyhound. If you’ve never seen one, they’re like a 1/4 scaled mini-me version. There’s also the Whippet which is a little bigger.

I’d love to have a rescue Greyhound or two someday. But I feel like I’d need some big ranch or something for them to run around.

The punters had to watch the rabbit get torn to pieces. They don't see the dogs getting killed.

Nah-they're the laziest dogs ever. Do great in apartments.

They do want some exercise, so if you can jog with them on a regular basis, they'll be fine. Sight hounds rarely bark as well, so they're quiet.

The breed might die out. I go to dog shows a lot and as far as I can tell, nobody breeds or shows them except for racers. Shame to lose so many magnificent canine genes.

One of the horsies we have was an ex-racer horse. He podiumed 9 out of 13 races but a foot injury put an end to his career. We found him in a field left for dead. We're lucky he wasnt put down as hes a sweet boy. When he breaks into a full on sprint around the pasture its pretty amazing to see.
