what is the difference between putting him in a cell with cement walls or one with padded walls for life... :rolleyes
he is clearly a danger to society, including other persons in prisons, even if they are total asshats.

My office.
Its a bit of a stretch to say he will walk away after two years. He has to prove himself sane before being allowed out. Good luck with that. That proof of burden will be with him for the next 55 years. I dont like the not guilty by reason of insanity defense either, but lets keep it realistic, he wont be walking out of the "hospital" in 24 months.

I put hospital in quotes because it aint like the one sane and normal people go to. I once performed inside the Napa State hospital where they keep criminally insane people. If I wasnt told it wasnt a prison, I would have thought for sure it was. Guards, barbwire, and high walls arent at any hospital I've ever been in.

Which costs the taxpayer more per year, prison or mental ward? I'm all for putting him where it's cheaper for the taxpayer. :|

"The unemployed automotive worker is still charged with murder in Alameda County, where he allegedly began his attacks by running down a man on a Fremont street."

to my knowledge, he hasn't been tried for this and he is nowhere near getting out of any institution.

Make sure to read the whole article. He is going to be evaluated to see if he is sane every 2 years for the next 55 years, and only if he is determined to be sane will they let him 'go', but there's a catch. This is only his San Francisco county sentence. Alameda county, on the other hand, is waiting until the San Francisco sentence is resolved before trying him. So if convicted, he would go to jail in Alameda county if/after he is declared sane.
