Iconic Destinations don’t last forever

Quite a shocker, it's been a landmark through the years - mostly with tourists but I've gone a couple times moreso for the scenery than the food.

The cafe right up the street is also closing as well, known for their overcrowded breakfast crowds on the weekend.

Isn't the chronicle's title a bit click baity? NPS will find another concessionaire. The current ones have been there since 73. It's gone through many changes over the decades.

Rolls with it...
It's been about 10-12 years since the last time at the Cliffhouse.

I miss Playland At The Beach, which was just down the street. :afm199

Never went to Playland, but the diving bell in the video ended up on the Monterey Wharf... I worked on it for 2 summers in high school. Whatta fun summer job!

It was taken down after it was burned up when the pier caught fire in 1982...

I took these pics before they removed it.

Playland was a fav when I was just a punk.

I lived my first year of life in that hood and my Dad and Mom would take me there every year for a bit. That vid brought back some good memories. Thanks.

The spinning platform was my fav and made my Dad LOL.

sad, been there a few times - great place, covid sucks :mad

Sorry, I would say it's the response to Covid that sucks.

I was going to the Cliff House back when it had the old time game machines downstairs and was split into a few eateries, not just a single fancy one. I've also taken my family to the more recent version for some very nice meals with great service, prior to the recent stupidity of SF and CA in general.

I used to go there as a kid. I loved that place. It's a horrible response by the Park Service. In the long run, it's way cheaper to have the restaurant operating and maintaining the building than close it. I guarantee that if the place is boarded up, the next event will be demolition.

Tough to read between the lines on this one. It could be gamesmanship/bluffing by the current tenant in order to get some rent relief during the pandemic, or it could be as it seems on the surface. Either way I would not expect the closure to be permanent, it will reopen once we get past the pandemic. It's too valuable of a space and NPS needs the money. I'm sure there's a long list of potential operators who would jump at the chance.

Anyway, I think the restaurant got too fancy over the years. Personally I preferred sitting at the bar. A late afternoon with a Bloody Mary or two and some oysters or a crab sandwich, bleeding into sunset? One of the iconic SF experiences IMO.

Uggh I read this last week. Not that it was a great place but it was part of SF for a very long time.
Playland..... Whammy remembers it before it closed down Mom and Dad took my older brother and I there a few times.
Gangs and other illicit activities took over down there, and helped lead to its demise.

There are some seriously old bastards on this forum to remember playland.

Santa’s Village in Scotts Valley? Frontierland?

Edit, Frontier Village. The other is Disney...
