I'm doing a 3 day ride soon up to the 36. Camping on 36 on the western side and have a free day planned to do whatever.. drink/fish in the river, hike or explore around. Riding 36 on the last day to the 5 will be the main event but I'm looking for any ideas of other side roads or areas of interest on the free day. Let me know if you all have any tips.

I ripped through hwy36 last summer on the last leg of a 3,400 mile tour and have been wanting to do this 3 day to spend more time in the area.

We'll be on sportbikes (s1000rr and a fz1) so pavement only.

Ride 3 north to Yreka. Then a bit further north on 5 to 96 and then southwest. Spend the night at the inn at the Hoopa reservation and go for a swim in the river. Win!

Make sure you check CalTrans to see what time the closures on 36 are in effect. Last summer it was closed all day except lunch.

Good catch. I rode it last August and I don't recall any major closures. Or maybe I just got lucky and showed up at the right time? I can't really tell how bad the closures are from the caltrans site:

Buy some Humboldt Creamery Ice Cream.

This is the co that makes Costco's Super Premium Vanilla Ice Cream, the best (aside from homemade) that I have ever tasted.

Their other products are sold in N.CA Eureka/Fortuna area.

Hwy 96 to Somes Bar, Forks of Salmon, Cecilville Callahan Rd. Lunch in Etna. Another nice loop is Sawyers Bar out of Etna to Somes Bar to Cecillville. Do it Clockwise and you can have lunch at the brewery in Etna.
At a minimum, do the Callahan to Cecilville section in and then out. It's like your own private race track.

When 36 is blocked you might consider 299

Nice road, but too much traffic for my taste.

96 along the Klamath River has few drivers as it's way out in the middle of nowhere. It's about 160 miles along the river in some of the most beautiful country in California.

The inn at the Hoopa indian reservation is neat and clean and reasonably priced. Ask for the key necessary to access the back side where you can go down to the river. Actually, as I recall, if you have a ground floor room, you can just go out your patio door and down to the river.

Last few times I was there there was no restaurant in town. The last one closed. However, there's a market within easy walking distance and they have a deli where you can get stuff like BBQ chicken and stuff. Complete market. Buy some dinner and something to drink and go down to the river behind the inn to eat and watch the sunset.

The loop from Walker on 3 up to Yreka and then 5 for a few miles and then down 96 to the reservation can easily be done in a day. Less than a day.

Also waaay too many cops out there on 299. I generally avoid it when I can, only taking it as a quick way back to the cost or 5.

Make sure you bring your layers. If you're staying on the coast its foggy here until noon. Hot inland

299 a lot of traffic
36 more scenic
96 is sexy
3 is scenic

salmon river road from 96 to 3 is a must do

bald hill road is nice too

the really scenic stuff/county roads are pretty goaty, not sport bike friendly in my experience like salmon river road.

I usually end up on my oilhead versus my hypermotard for that reason.

late braking
I know the Caltrans website says otherwise, but we were up on 36 this past Friday and Saturday. They opened up the construction zone at 3pm on Friday as indicated on the message board. FYI

The way I read that CalTrans sign is there is controlled traffic at two different locations, on the Fortuna side of 36. That's good. Last summer it was straight closed from 9-5 Mon-Fri. At least now they're letting traffic through.

So go ride 36 and have a blast!! It's easily the best road in the state.

Undetermined
Intermittent road closures are great. They allow you to get ahead of traffic and have a 10 minute gap until the next set of vehicles ahead.
