I did a similar ride recently, i took 101 up to 128 (the road that takes you from 101 to 1) and one up till it becomes 101 again (cleanest part of one with no traffic, that was cool) then did the redwood highway and came back all the way on one to SF (two and half day trip). One advise, stay in big towns....and may be plan your stay, else you will spend more money than you want to!

Make sure you gas up the last place you can before heading up 96..I think it's happy camp. There is a cardlock station in Seiad valley (or was the last time I was there), but it's really just a couple pumps on a gravel lot, and hasn't been open before as I've been through there.
299 and 96 are about the best roads in the state.

IF you have time... Go up on Lassen. or Lava Beds NM Both are great places to visit. You can camp at both.

Good days ride from Fortuna. Up 36 to 3; 3 to 299; 299 down to 1; and 1 back to Fortuna.
AMA last year called this one of the Top 10 rides in the USA. Do it so you can have braging rights. Get gas in Hayfork (Hwy3) The General Store on the North end of town is the only place to gas up. They have a small restraunt in back of the store and the prices are OK.
I have been on 36 to 3 and 3 to 299, but not down the hill on 299. I will get her done one of this days.:teeth
