how to store a motorcycle motor properly?

so im doing my first ever tear down on a motorcycle on my klx300. im planning on getting the frame powder coated and refreshing the rear suspension, as well as doing a kx fork swap here pretty soon. this will involve me removing the motor from the frame and keeoing it aside for a bit of time

issue is i dont know how long itll be until im ready to drop the motor back in. so what would be the best way to store it? condition wise and just general things i should watch out for while doing this? just rule of thumbs and things i should definitely not do?

ive searched online, but i trust BARF over most other internet sources

fogging oil in cyl. plug all holes.

"Plug all holes". In this case, get you some new/fresh shop rags, get them nice & sloppy with fresh oil, put them into the intake & exhaust ports, then cover each port with a few layers of Saran Wrap/plastic film/baggies, then rubber-band/cable-tie them in place. Leave the spark plugs in place. If you've got a transmission blowhole, cover that with plastic too.

Then put the whole thing in a heavy-duty trash bag, seal it, and put it where it can't tip over or get smacked by something else. Win.

I just taped over the inlet and exhaust of the head when I had my spare EX500 engine hanging around. Left it on some cardboard in the garage. At least it should be in a dry place, off any dirt or soil.

nice.

Thank you for the responses everybody. If all goes according to plan i should have the bike in pieces no longer than a month. just going to get the frame powder coated and reassemble from there. this may help me for my next rebuild though. first bie is going to be more of a test run for a future Summer/Winter project
