How to properly prepare a bike for a trackday?

Hello fellow BARFers,

So I've been saving up and purchasing gear over the course of the last few months and I am just about ready in that aspect of trackday riding. I ride my R6 daily to work and school, and although I do all the regular maintenance myself (oil change, brake fluid/pads, engine ice'd, etc.) I'm not 100% sure I have done all necessary prep work to have her up and running perfectly for her first trackway. The bike only has 5k miles on it so it's mechanically sound.

Any input as to what I should look for or preventative maintenance I can do would be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get out there.

Thank you in advance,
-Zach

I think a buncha people will chime in.. But have you chosen a target date/track day provider? If you take a look at whichever one, they have a prep checklist.. And some have certain nuances to be aware of. most require taping of lights, some want rtv sealer on the drain bolt/safety wire.. Same with water wetter or engine ice in the radiator.

Have fun brotha - it's addicting!

Most likely will go with Keigwins! Thanks for the input, I look forward to a lifetime of trackdays.

Does anyone requeire taping the headlights on bikes without glass headlights anymore? Most simply require that you disconnect the brake light or tape it if you can't. On an R6, there should be no need to tape the lights.

I too just did my first track day at Keigwins. All you have to do is remove the mirrors, pull the fuses for your taillights and blinkers. Might as well pull the one for the headlights while your at it.

If your doing a day at Laguna they require a number as well.

They recommend water wetter for the coolant instead of a glycol based alternative. Not required though.

If you have any more questions shoot me a PM. I'm in Campbell about 10 minutes from you.

Let's Ride requires it. I'm not sure why.

yea - I've always questioned the need to tape, considering no glass anymore. But, it's not something that I actively contend to the provider, since throwin on some tape isn't too difficult - I'm not one to try and tape it perfectly

BTW: Did you pull up next to me one day at Lark and Winchester?

I believe it was you I pull up next to. You were on a matte grey 2014 R6 if I recall correctly. We should go on a ride soon!

Personally, I think Z2 is a better choice for a 1st timer.

Please do elaborate :) I only say Keigwins because it's what's most common around here ( at least through my research ).

What does Z2 do that Keigwins doesn't that's beneficial to a first-time track day rider?

WHAT !!!!!!!! You still haven't gone to the track? With 3 R6s under your belt, I thought you would be in the A group already. You are going to love it bro :thumbup

I just did my 1st track day with Z2 @ Sonoma and I only have great things to say about them. I don't know what Keigwins process is but I can tell you all about my day, what kind of prep I did and how the overall process was. For me, I am hooked :)

Here is the review I posted on Z1000 forum after my event:

**************************

I reached there at about 7. Got the paperwork, suspension setup (done by a professional for $20) and tire check done by 8. Got in the first classroom session at 9. The instructor spoke about the track rules and the right way to get more out of the event day.

Session 1 09:40 - This was just a follow lead session. Getting familiar with the track.

Session 2 10:40 - I got an instructor for this session so that I could follow him and and get the correct cornering lines. He then followed me for couple of laps and we spoke about the areas where I needed improvement. I was all over the track with messed up cornering lines. Lol.

Session 3 11:40 - Went alone. Real slow through the tight corners. Got a couple of panic attacks but managed well to not crash. Still trying to memorize the map and not see an unexpected corner. About 10 minutes in the session, I took a wrong lane (meant for cars) and got flagged and pulled off the track. Instructor explained me to stay focused and not look anywhere else except the track.

Session 4 13:40 - I did not want my previous session to affect this one. I spent some time memorizing the track during lunch. Went slow for the first lap and then started to pick up speed. Very confident about the track layout by the end of this session.

Session 5 14:40 - More faster, more comfortable, more confident.

Session 6 15:40 - More faster, more comfortable, more confident.

Session 7 16:40 - Got an instructor again. This time I asked him to follow me throughout the session to get feedback. He said I was still slower through corners. I could have gone faster and that I need to trust the tires that will go where I want them to go. He mentioned my cornering lines were good but I could still enter the corners a little late. Biggest compliment I got from him was that I was very consistent in all the laps and that he would be comfortable passing me if he were behind me. He also said for the first time at the track, I did very good overall. He advised to continue to be in the beginner group for the next 5-6 events till I go at higher speed in corners and then think of moving to higher group.

Stats:
Around 130 minutes of track time
98 miles total distance on track
Around 38 laps
Top speed around 90 mph
Got passed only a few times throughout the day (either I was doing good or others were equally slower, haha)

Overall, it was an amazing day and I think I am hooked. My thighs are hurting a lot. I no longer have the desire to go faster on the street now, at least that's how I feel right now. The instructors were very very helpful and they really want you to do well. Thank you all for the advice. Like you guys mentioned I went with an agenda and the goal was to come out a better confident rider. I believe to have advanced towards the goal.

Feel free to PM me for more info.

Thanks.

More emphasis on passing ( a 6 'buffer), no inside passes, 1st lap technique, more instructor input. The instructor giving the new riders class is fantastic. Could be Kegwins doesn't cater as much to 1st timers. I just felt safer on the track with Z2 verses Kegwins. I saw quite a few inside moves I would deem not safe in a beginners session.

What does Z2 do that Keigwins doesn't that's beneficial to a first-time track day rider?

They way Z2 does is they have a bunch of instructors they make available for you. You can ride with an instructor all day long and they'll keep helping you get better. If you are doing well, you can go have a blast on your own. They leave it completely up to you how much you want from the instructors. They'll also have a class-room session before every track session where they talk about body position, cornering lines, etc. Again, the class is optional.

The instructors will also record you when they are following and will mail you the video for your review. Not sure if this is a norm but I think its great they do that. I do have a gopro but its pretty useless if you are trying to analyze your laps. Its best if someone is recording you. That gives the best feedback about your body position, your cornering lines, etc.

I do not know about your skill sets but I started with the C/Novice group. There is no pressure whatsoever. You can ride at your own pace and build your confidence as the day progresses.

Do you plan to start in C group or B group? And I thought all the track days were done. Where you going at?

Still deciding on that weekend. We went on Nov 3 & 4 with Keigwins.
The day was beautiful, No rain or clouds. Perfect sunshine.
But the mornings and nights were chilly.
Expecting even worse during Thanksgiving weekend.
But as they say, ride rain or shine :-|

Z2 and Keigwins websites have a good checklist to go through.
Prep the bike as best as you can. Both Keigwins and Z2 instructors help a lot.
So don't have to freak out about missing anything.
You can always ask for help around the paddock :D
