How to modify or shut down a web site?

I have some friends who have a website that showcases a dog rescue that is no longer in service. This web site was managed by someone who is not longer available to them, so the site hasn't been updated in years. They'd like to either update it explaining that they have retired, or possibly shut it down completely.

They have no idea how to do this. And, neither do I. Curious if anyone here might point me in a direction to help them?

The simplest way to kill it is to stop paying the renewal of the domain registration for it. However by now it's likely to be quietly self renewing against a CC.

Same goes for the hosting company; just stop paying them to host the web site and it be removed from the internet.

You're going to need some basic information about the site to get started with this, if you don't have the information/credentials you need I'm unclear how you will convince the registrar or the hosting company to kill it.

A out of date CC expiration date will likely at some point cause those automatic payments to stop.

You will need to have the login where the domain name is reg'd to.
Then you can make a index page or just kill it and not route anything

Not to be too much of a shill for them, but squarespace makes it easy to run your own site now. Once you control the domain, it'll be easy to direct it to the new site.

I'll have them contact the administrator listed in the Whois info and see about getting the login info first. Then they can decide to update or shutdown.

I actually just cancelled my subscription with squarespace, but that's because I get free web hosting with my Adobe subscription. Adobe's web creation tools are a lot clunkier, but it was worth struggling through them to save a hundred or so bucks a year. I'd still recommend squarespace in a heartbeat.

There's some otehr tools out there like Wix, but I don't know how they compare
