How many times do you say "Drop it" ...

... before you shoot? Or is saying it four times too many when you're dealing with a guy who says, "Shoot me"?

Fresno motor uses his BMW for cover, then shoots machete-wielding man menacing him.

Not trying to stir up anything. Just thought it interesting that the motor and the guy with the knife went around the bike three times before the fatal shot was fired. And that the motor and other Fresno cops tried to resuscitate the man (who, after the shooting, was found to be a homeless felon with a history of violence) but still got folks saying he should have shot the knife out of the man's hand. Folks even put up a makeshift memorial for the dead guy.

I think the officer showed amazing restraint. I reckon homeless machete wielding maniac should have been shot as soon as he got within 21ft of the officer.

Fuck dude seriously.

CCW wielding civilian would have shot him as soon as a clear shot was possible.

BTW, try going to the range and shooting a 2.5x2.5 inch target from 15 feet away. Make sure to shake the target while shooting and for fun, do 50 jumping jacks before firing.

And you have shooting a weapon out of a suspect's hand.

I'm guessing the motor and the machete man were about 10 feet, if not less, from each other. Which means the likelihood of the motor missing center mass was slim.

And spot on, Tharkûn. I noticed that too. FPD officers carry a Beretta.

As many times as I can for as long as I can, until the bad guy forces my hand. I surely don't want to shoot someone. At the same time I'm not letting anyone wielding a knife to get close enough to me to use it. In addition to communicating to the bad guy, repeatedly giving commands shows potential witnesses that I am making every effort to defuse the situation before using deadly force. And no cowboy shots from me trying to shoot a weapon from someones hand. Centermass to eliminate the threat.

The guy who told the newspaper that the cop should have done something else should forward his address to the Fresno Police Department and request that he does not receive service. I mean, clearly, why would he want service from them if they're going to act so unprofessional and irresponsible?

Oh wait, I bet he's the first pussy to call 9-1-1 when he hears a deer, er I mean prowler, in his back yard while he hides in the bathroom with his wife and kids.

Great restraint on the officers part, bad judgement on the suspects.

Officers need to always assume they are being videotaped. Community activists scrutinize the use of deadly force, or any police contact. Once on youtube, it spreads like wildfire.

This lady, Emily Good was arrested videotaping a traffic stop from her front yard. The case was dismissed.

The machete guy made his dirt bed and now he's going to lie in it....
When it comes to these types of incidents and folks opinion(s), I always give more creedence to those of us who have had to draw down on a threat and to those few that had to pull the trigger to stop the threat.
Its easy to Monday morning quarterback but until you're being chased like this Officer, you really don't know how you'll react. You hope you'll react correctly, but until the feces hits the fan, you won't know! It's a common after action statistic that in most Officer's first shoots, they fire once. Most threats stop when shot placement is accurate.

For me its:

Ask
Tell
Make

End of story...

no no no. The lawyers changed that. It's now:
Ask
Ask again
Ask again with a please
Ask again with a please and sugar on top
Tell
Tell them again
Tell them again
Ask them again
ad nauseum

They took the "make" out of it.
:rolleyes
