Homeowner's insurance and "unacceptable" dog breeds?

As many of you know, we just recently moved, which means we needed a new homeowner's insurance policy. No big deal, I just called our insurance agent, he sold us a policy, some guy from the insurance company came out to take some pictures of the house, and that was that. Until yesterday, when we get a letter saying they are cancelling our policy because the inspection showed an "unacceptable" dog breed (Pitbull) on premises.

Has anybody else had this issue? Are we going to run into this with every insurance company? It's been a while since we bought homeowner's insurance (8 years) and we didn't have the dog then.

unfortunately it's a very common issue.
if you want to stay with that company challenge them to prove the dog is 1) an 'unacceptable' breed. they really can't and just saying "it looks like one" isn't proof. 2) if you don't want them, demand a total refund since they should have disclosed this issue up front. be sure to share the name of the company so other folks know who to avoid. 3) contact BADRAP in the bay area, they should know of carries who are willing to accept pitties on their policies. they wil lalso have some great resources for you on the issue itself and how to protect your rights as a responsible dog owner.

some insurance co's will qualify on an individual basis- a dog passing a Temperament Test (one group holds an annual tast date in July in Dixon) or a CGC is usually given more leeway since you've proven the individual dog has a stable character.

I hate breed bias.

we're with State Farm and our agent was informed immediately when we got our home policy that we not only own, but breed and train Akitas. they are another breed that makes the denied list.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to keep this company, so no need to challenge. I'll shop around.

Challenge it. Then cancel after they accept. One of the questions on a new policy may be: "Have you ever had insurance denied?"

at one point, i had four dogs, all of them on the "tough to insure" list. three of them were half-something, and that was enough.
fuckin sucks, but it's just another hoop to jump through.

I dealt with the same questionaire through my current insurance policy

2 dogs:

One isn't a pit bull, even though she may "look like it",
The other I put down as a mix

I think we can all agree that the only attack Luke would make on a person is an attack on the hand you're holding your food in... :laughing

Yes, Luke is a highly dangerous dog. Many people have nearly tripped over him as he was begging, or had their knees broken by his intensely wagging tail... :rolleyes

Listed both our dogs as "lab mix" and "boxer mix" (the adoption papers stated this as well).
CLEARLY, and obviously, our "lab mix" has some pit features. The "boxer mix" is full pitbull.
I've invited out ins. agent over years ago as he needed to write up the paperwork on the house and saw the dogs. Didn't mention anything. In fact, he played with them and as he left, commenting on the neighbor's annoying little yappy (unleashed) dog.

State Farm actaully had an agent drive by my house and at the time I had a chain link fence. They mailed me pictures of my black lab saying I had a pit bull and were raising my rates. I hate to fax them a copy of the AKC paperwork showing he was a pure bred lab to stop them. It kind of pissed me off, but they were the cheapest option for me

I think what really pisses me off is that the guy saw the dog for half a second and never said a word about him or asked what breed he is.

That's why I don't fix the ears on my Dobies. They're reds, and I say, "oh, those are Weimaraners."
