Holiday Riding

Holiday weekends are seemingly a great opportunity to get out for a ride. A whole extra day to get out a bit further than you normally can. Or just an extra day on your favorite local back roads.

I personally avoid riding at all on holiday weekends. Why, you may ask? Too many fuckin' drunks.

Let's not forget that LEOs are also out in greater numbers to catch the drunks, or speeding motorcyclists.

Ride safe and thanks to those who gave it all in service to their country.

I avoid being on the bike during Memorial Day, The Fourth, and Labor Day. Too many tourists, too many drunks, too many policemen.

Riding my bicycle to work this morning on a small 1.2 mile stretch of road, Hwy 1 frontage road McGregor in Aptos. I counted 25 of various Jack Daniels, Seagrams, vodka bottles in the bike lane. That was just northbound. I'll count southbound on the way home. Sure doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. There was a few last week(maybe 8), but this weekends addition is kinda alarming.

I personally avoid weekends. When I was still a working stiff, I had to cram all my riding in to weekends or my commute (Whoopdeedoo).

Nowadays there is so much traffic everywhere, all weekend, except during the rainy season, when there is only moderately too much traffic.

Is it true that Kansas has only twisty mountain roads, 500K a year jobs and free housing? I think that's what I heard....

Had a short amount of time to get out today and Alice's isn't too far. Never been there before so decided to go for the first time. Was pretty packed and almost all adventure bikes (BMW's, to be exact). A couple of Harley's and a sports bike or two thrown in the mix. It was misting a bit so didn't stay up there too long with damp/wet roads. Definitely looking forwards to going back sometime soon! Whole way there and back today, almost no traffic on the roads.

Side note, I thought it was interesting that many people knew about the newer Royal Enfields and thought mine was one of the new 650's. But, once I told them it wasn't, they were pretty lost on what to make of the bike. That tells me that for as long as the brand as been around (1901), people in the U.S. who aren't die hard fans already are now starting to hear about them with the release of the new twins. I'm really glad to know that's the case!

I also try to avoid rides on heavy tourist/drinking weekends. Even for driving my vehicle, I don't drive after dark. I don't trust others to be responsible with their drinking to put my life in their hands.

I had a great ride from Pacifica down to Santa Cruz along 35 and 9 and back up 1 yesterday. Very little traffic, but some wetness and mist.

Today, however, coming home in the cage on 92 west, some nut on a big black Harley nearly rear ended me at the split to south 280. Nutcase was all over the road at top speed - easily hitting 100 mph weaving through traffic. Summer seems to bring out the stupidest riders.
