Holding on to an old bike

Is not a rational decision. I have an old ratted out '96 CBR F3 that has been collecting dust since I picked up my 599. Today, after leaving it sitting with a empty tank (no drained mind you) I put the battery back in, gave it a couple gallons of gas and after a couple tries it was running. It's going to a garage for the winter, the plan was to sell in the spring, but now, well, it's run so faithfully I'm tempted to keep it.

Cool story eh? :nerd

Ive been doing massive house cleaning and getting rid of old junk that I don't use regulary anymore. Good high end junk, cheap junk, sentimental junk...it's all junk that's taking up space an money. It's a great feeling to be rid of it.

I think everybody needs two bikes. That way you have something to ride when you tinker on the other one.

It's registered, insured for as little as one can legally insure a sport bike, and it sure was fun riding it around the city today. That said, it needs a new steering bearing, chain, and front rotor, oh and it's super duper fugly. I'll probably store it for the winter and see what sort of offers I get on it come spring. Or maybe it'll become a track bike, who knows.

Bike market is down. Figure out what you can sell it for now/in the spring, before/after you do the work it needs. Fugly is in the eyes of the beholder. Figure out how much it would cost you per year to hold on to it (including any necessary repairs). Factor in how much space you have to store it. Don't forget you can non-op it for cheap!

Now you can do the math! If you really need the space or the money - sell it! If you have a nephew/brother-in-law who really needs a cheap bike - sell it to them and have them do the repairs. Otherwise, why not keep it? It runs, right? If you have the room to store it, keep it until you find the right person to sell/give it to. Girlfriend/wife? Family member? Friend? If you can't think of anyone you might want to have it, sell it and get something else.

It's great having two bikes, but an F3 and 599 are too similar. Get yourself a dual sport.

Triple Threat

Be like water My friend..
I recall having 3 bikes out of commission all at once, one was a dead battery, one in the shop for something and the other one on stands getting new tires.

I was glad there were a few in the garage as back ups.

Personally, I like having triple, I mean 3 bikes to choose from.

Kickstand you really don't have good luck with those things do ya? I guess technically three is a better number. One long term project and two decently working ones.
Triple, you are very lucky to have the triple...

:laughing:laughing I actually have great luck. It always turns out that in one 7 day period a rock flies through a radiator at 90mph and I catch a nail in something else the next morning and the slave cyclinder pukes out fluid in something else that night. Once Im limited to Caltrain and a skateboard I tend to fix things very quickely.

I would always have 2-5 perfectly running vehicles. They'd all run flawlessly for 2 years and then all break something within the same week.:laughing

thats the fucking truth

I keep 5 running vehicles, and it seems they all need maintenance at the exact same time

We call it "garage envy" at our house. If one's getting fondled by the mechanic, they all want to be fondled by the mechanic. :x

Jesus don't you know it...

I pull off the XR's old sprockets and chain tonight, planning to swap on a new chain. Sprockets had looked pretty darn good before and I honestly thought, for a first, they wouldn't need replacing. Nope. They're indeed too worn to salvage. No problem, I say. I've got the old Volvo to drive, and I can order some new sprockets.

Go inside. Shower. Get in the Volvo to meet friends for dinner. Get 1 mile from the house and the car dies. Stand in rain for an hour trying to diagnose.End up getting a 90 second towtruck tow back to my house. Probably the fuel pump. Go fucking figure :nchantr

It all breaks at once. Always. Every time :x

When I was a student I had 4 cars and remember still having to take the bus to work. :rofl

More is not always better. I have 4 bikes and 2 cars right now and I'm trying to bring it down to 1 and 1. Then I can start a new project. :teeth
