MILPITAS -- A 29-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday night in a crash that shut down four freeway lanes for several hours, the California Highway Patrol said.
Emergency personnel found the East Palo Alto man dead in one of the freeway lanes when they were called around 9:15 p.m. to the crash scene on northbound Interstate 880 just north of the Tasman Drive overcross and state Highway 237, the CHP said. Another motorist pulled the motorcycle to the shoulder of the freeway after the wreck, they said.
The CHP also was looking for a newer black Dodge Charger or Challenger that may have been involved in the collision. Witnesses told the CHP the Dodge, which has retrostyle wraparound taillights, was speeding significantly before the crash.
Police closed all but the far left lane of the five-lane freeway for four hours after the crash to investigate and process evidence. The lanes were reopened around 1:30 a.m.
The CHP are still investigating what caused the wreck, and it is not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor. The CHP is asking anyone who may have seen the Dodge speeding before the crash to contact the CHP's San Jose office at 408-467-5400.
