Hero Dirt

Moab on my mind
Rain came and melted most of the snow, so there was a lot of hero dirt in the desert.

The weather was about 45F, cloudy, and breezy.

This is the start of the rocky west-east ridge that starts at 3:48 in the video.

It made me love the Shinko R505 so much more and question my plan to replace it with a soft terrain winter tire.

When I got up to the radio tower, I could see no snow on Dogskin mountain, which was surprising.

What radio tower? This radio tower.

Feral horses mostly didn't care about me and let me get close. Video at 8:20. I guess that hill now has a name: Feral Horse Hill.

I've encountered hero snow too.

I've noticed the dirt here on the coast was tightly packed with traction last week.

Hero dirt is basically traction traction traction = really good grip!!

It is what makes riders ride like the rock stars we wish we were. :teeth

Cool stuff 2 stoke.

Yeah, soft, forgiving, traction, giving, awesome... makes you ride like a superstar...

Oooh! Ok my first experience on dirt must have been hero dirt then cause I was doing controlled figure 8 slides with ease. Haven’t been back since but I’ll temper my expectations lol

I've got another 505 coming from the Rocky Mountain elves and the brown Santa today. I was going to try a 525 for the soft conditions but whenever I hit rocks I remember how awesome the 505 is.

What front are you running these days?

I've got a brand new F546 in the garage, but didn't realized I'd purchased the 80/100 size... which apparently is miserably undersized and rumored to perform like crap. Not sure if I want to run it, or buy something else. Hate to waste a brand new tire like that, though.

Shinko 546F 80/100 has been on for a while, with a few side knobs starting to chunk. My opinion of it ranges from adequate to great. It was great in the hero dirt. Going down the steepest slickrock in Moab, it felt like there wasn't enough contact patch, just a razor thin patch of rubber to do the braking. I use 10psi with Tubliss.

New Shinko 216MX 80/100 ready to replace it.

Is that....a place where people aren't supposed to ride at anymore? If so, I wanna ride there!

Riding All The Time
hey, I was riding some of that awesome desert dirt that same wknd yardsale. Awesome stuff.
Kind of my first desert dirt ride, out very near to jawbone canyon (although my bud's who showed me around said it wasn't a true "desert ride")
They all swear by the M5B tire, but I went with the shinko 525. This was my second 525. I almost always run 505's, but figured the wider spacing of the 525 would better suit the terrain down there.
I was happy with the 525, but have nothing to compare to for those conditions
Here's how it looked after 2 days (I think 80 miles total) of gnarly climbs and lots of very technical rock canyons and gobs of awesome singletrack.
