Help with another prototype.

Back at it again.

Do you ever get tired of carrying your helmet around or wish you had a way to tote it and keep your hands free? I realize that almost all bikes have helmet "locks" but it sucks because a strap can be cut and someone can run off with your helmet.

Basically, I commute to SF on my moto for work, and got tired of carrying my helmet to the office and trying to fumble around with my phone, key fobs, an ecig and the like, and then realized that when I have been to events and things, where I rode, that I got tired of having to always carry my helmet, especially when I had some type of backpack or messenger bag with me that the helmet wouldn't fit it.

So, I decided to do something about it and made a "helmet sling." It can strap to any bag (ideally, backpacks, messenger bags, or the like), strangely, it is practically unnoticeable that you even have your helmet slung, balance of weight in all of my testing has been exceptional.

I would be very interested in hearing if you have ever found a want for something like this.

If you have, I have a couple spare (rough) prototypes that I could loan out on a few conditions, like: don't steal the idea, provide a review and or ideas for improvement, and just let me know if you like it or not...i guess that would be covered in the review portion. Also, it is in the works to have a few produced for sale/distribution.

So, in Barf fashion, have at it....I would be happy to answer any questions and retaliate with snark and banter.

I would be very interested in this. I like being able to keep my hands free instead of carrying around a helmet. I tried the Icon backpack that had a deployable helmet bag on the bottom. I didn't like how I couldn't sit down with the bag deployed so I rarely use it. Looking forward to your solution.

I have a Ogio "no drag mach 5" backpack that is designed for motorcycle riding and it comes with a helmet sling.

Haven't used it because I commute to work with the bag and leave my helmet in my office, but maybe you can look at what they did / see where you can innovate more :)

Hey Eric,

Thanks for the heads up. Is their sling the helmet "diaper" that attaches to the backpack?
If so, can you use it with any other bags? Also, mine will keep a lower profile and needs less space and does not require a specific backpack. It is kind of a stand alone sling.

Krusty,
I noticed you are in Santa Rosa...do you ever venture into the bay area? Also, would love to set you up with one and see what you think

Its already been done and every Shoei helmet you buy comes with one.

Also they are so easy to make its probably not worth the cost of materials to mass produce. Not trying to shit on your parade and I commend your thoughtful idea but really its just a bag with pull string that you put over your shoulder.

I have an Ogio backpack as well but mine has the helmet hood, as did my old Alpinestars. I've seldom used either of them.

The Mach5 model, like a previous poster has mentioned, has the strap:

So, I don't think you are raining on the parade, you already mentioned it is a bag with a pull string. That is not what I am making. As well, I have used the bag with a pull string with backpacks and other bags and it is an actual pain in the ass. But I definitely appreciate the input.

Is that strap detachable?

Hey Sir Skanking, I might be interested in user testing this for you. Obviously I say that because depending on the design I would like to use something like this. I commute to East bay from SF daily and play pool two+ nights a week at different bars etc. In other words I am carrying a lot of stuff in addition my moto gear. I also smoke and wouldnt mind a free hand while walking with all the crap.

Anyway, if you want to PM some photos I could let you know if it is something I want to try.

I can sign an NDA or just shake on not stealing your idea too.

I see so many back packs that would fit this task perfectly...I can't imagine why it is a problem.

Helmet out the back pack is like nothing, Helmet (and other goodies) in, still small.

I sure wouldn't have a helmet dangle and swing on the outside of a back pack.

+1 having a helmet just out there is asking for trouble. I also don't see what this is all about. That helmet strap is a 1 inch webbing strap with a push button on the end. Very easy to make and mass produce.

Interested in being a tester, with one caveat...can I use your device sans backpack? The Road King doesn't seem to have any kind of helmet lock, and I rarely wear a backpack.
I get tired of dealing with my helmet while I shop.
I've looped the chinstrap around my belt, or through my beltloop, but it never seems very secure.

You keep assuming what the design is when he hasn't even really described it. He just told you what it does.

I haven't seen this thing, but for me I don't want a helmet in my backpack because that is all that would fit. I have other stuff in my bag that I need. I always carry my helmet and thus a smartly designed way to carry the helmet would be welcome. In fact I occasionally do strap my helmet to my bag when I need to.

I will wait until I see what the idea is before I judge it.

I like the idea. I have a Kriega R20, and a Schubert C3 Pro, that cannot be used with typical helmet locks (Schubert C3 doesn't have the the typical ring that most helmets straps have). Would your system work for this?

Don't most backpacks with a helmet sling have it outside of the pack? For me personally, when I get off my bike at work, I don't take my backpack off. As well, I have different size bags for whatever I am carrying with me. Also, I am not in a financial situation to buy whatever gear I would like to have. So, I found/ made an alternative that isn't bag specific.

You most definitely can. Granted, you will feel the weight then, but I tested it with belt loops as well as just attached to my belt. Is it a full face helmet?

looking at a Schuberth and the Kriega, Yes. I do not see any reason why it shouldnt.:thumbup

Yep, full-face. I don't mind the weight at all, it's the loss of dexterity that kills me.

I like the idea. I'm sick of getting teased about my "Mommy Hook" 'biner that I've drafted into helmet carrying duty...
