Helmets- recommend a replacement for Shoei GT Air

SVJ

That Looks About Right
My helmet is 7years old and I was ready to replace it with the exact same one... but as always happens to me, it’s been discontinued. I did some research and the newer model doesn’t seem to get the greatest reviews, so I’m hesitant to spend $600 to find out I don’t like it either.

Any suggestions for a good, quiet lid with a flip down sun shade? Or do you have a pristine, white, medium gt air laying around that you want to get rid of?

Shoei fits my noggin best and doesn't pinch or displace my earlobes so that's what I like. I've tried other helmets: Bell, AGV, Arai; but none of them fit me as well as Shoei.

A couple of months ago I replaced my old GT-Air with... a GT-Air. On Ebay I found a Ducati dealer in Orange County who still had a few first-gen GT-Airs sitting around. $500 for a brand new one with graphics. Including pin-lock shield!

old and slow
Surprising me, I've seen multiple first gen GT Airs on clearance at various dealers/cycle gear types in the $2-300 range. First gen Neotecs were $300 at a dealer I was recently at, not that it will do you much good, because it was in New Mexico.

The SRL 2 Sena provisions for the new Shoeis is pretty slick if you're into that sort of thing. What are the reviews saying that make it a lesser helmet than the original?

keep checking ebay. I ride with the older GT-air as well they show up there from time to time new in box. Might have to look for a matte black medium to have a spare.

I had the gt air for about 5 years. It was a great helmet, just a little too heavy in my opinion. When it was time to get a new one, I opted for the RF1200 with a transition visor. Super happy with it!

I used to wear Arai because of that fit, and the wonderful interior, but the lack of a drop down sunshade put me off buying another. I instead went with the HJC Rpha 70ST and it has been wonderful and comes in at a fair price point. My friend currently has a GT Air and is considering moving over to HJC as well. Revzilla gave it helmet of the year or something when it first came out.

Wut, bodda you?
I still ride with my arai rx-q and signet which I prefer over my GT Air but my new love is my schuberth C3 Pro

The GT Air is a great helmet but, as previously mentioned, it feels “heavier” than all my other helmets and not quite as quiet to me.

I ride with earplugs but it’s possible the fit of the GT on my melon creates the perceived “noise”.

I find the craftsmanship on par with the arai and schuberth when you’re talking about build quality in that price range.

Ymmv but paintwork and decals on less expensive lids have shown why helmets like arai, Shoei and schuberth command and retain their values.

FYI pm sent re: WTB pristine white gt air in medium...
