helmets - car vs. M-spec?

so like what up with that. :confused I haven't researched the exact specs but for auto events an M-rated lid won't pass tech if they go by the book. But at this point aren't all helmets (U.S. bound that is, Euro is another story) Snell & DOT certified?

The biggest difference between car and bike specs is that the bike helmets are "use once, throw away" single impact whereas the car helmets supposedly good for multiple bounces as well as fire retardant.

well actually the biggest difference is bike helmets look alot better with all the cool graphics!

since my arai is so friggin old I been using my cage lid a Shoei RF-4 (snell '95/DOT). (never fails to elicit comments like what Shoei is that??? :D )

I did a SpeedTrialUSA track day at Buttonwillow last Dec and they were allowing MC helmets, but I just checked their site and they changed their reqs to say "Motorcycle Helmets Not Allowed".

yah yah that what I mean! what about all these "foreign" helmets that met EA / Euro standards. the rumor is those are more stringent than the our Snell tests!!! just one look at the EA motorcycle clothing armor is pretty convincing - why we let unrated, plain ole sponge foam to be allowed is a HUGE :confused to me!!!

but I guess that's why all this is up for grabs for gubment regulation soon? is that good or bad? I just want to know the facts and be able to make informed buying decisions.

ps. the good news is the local shop had no problem giving me their data sheet on their "wonder armor" testing and I will post (only on BARF!) when I get my scanner going again.

the bad news was they totally forgot to hem the pants so I had to leave them until tomorrow. D-O-H-!

I felt very naked riding w/o any knee protection (and no back protector only had my messenger bag). this is a bad habit IMO and I need to change it n.o.w.

Signet GT came in today - sweet. me likes. fumbled for almost 1/2 an hour trying to put the smoke screen on but yeah, no tools required (mercifully) :D .

It's totally lightweight compared to the car racing lid. Ditto to my ancient Ultravent. One thing I noticed right away too is lack of chinstrap cover piece. I guess that was part of the fire retardant spec to protect it?

It will be a challenge trying to keep it ding free.
