Hello BARF

Hello BARF! I just graduated from college on the East Coast this past May (great time to graduate, I know) and recently got a job in downtown SF (although I'm living in Sacramento for the time being until the rona passes). I'm still a pretty new rider, but I'm excited to experience norcal's roads and learn as much as I can along the way!

Here's a pic of my current bike that I bought in July right after I moved here.

My previous/first bike was a '15 CBR300R that I sold right before I moved. Looking forward to riding with yall!

:newbie Derek,

Good to have you join teh BARF.

Hope you enjoy it and the new bike. Lots of great moto adventures around here.

:ride with a :teeth

Thanks all. Yep it really has been pretty smoky around here lately, though I imagine those near SF have had it way worse these past few days...

Hahaha - 0 minutes, because I don't need to! I'm only up in Sac because WFH is still in place. I figured why pay an extra 1k a month to live in SF when my "office" is just a couple feet from my bed?

Greetings & welcome to BARFing! :welcome :teeth

You're in a nice location, very close to the Sierras for riding :ride and close enough to SF to smell it. :barf :laughing

Nice bike, congrats on getting it!

Whereabouts on the East Coast? Quite a few transplants here, the winter snows somehow never show up and we can ride year-round. :party

Thank you! I was in Ithaca, NY (upstate!) - went to college there! Being able to ride year round is definitely a great perk. Storing my bike during the winter was such a PITA...

Oh, yeah, the Finger Lakes area. Nice! So, Cornell or IC? :teeth

I'm from Glens Falls, 50 miles north of Albany, foothills of the Adirondacks and went to college in Oneonta. Lake effect snow from November thru March, some years. Yeah, winters here are much better. :thumbup

That being said, you've got much more experience riding in "extreme" conditions than most folks here, so that's a advantage. Driving rain, thunder & lightning, slush, white-out conditions, etc., are things that are completely foreign to the natives. :teeth Some of the best/better riders here won't go out if it's going to rain, which puts them at a disadvantage when it actually does rain on their ride. :rofl

Cornell, although I did do a big research project with a professor from IC, so maybe a bit of both?! I remember one year it snowed in late April or early May, definitely caught me off guard (even for Ithaca!)

Interesting that you mention the extreme weather riding experience - last year I actually rode until December before I finally caved and put my bike away, and by then it was already freezing cold with snow on the ground. However, because they're so good with clearing/salting the roads over there immediately after any snow, the roads honestly didn't feel much worse than a typical post-rain wet road. I don't know how well roads get cleared in CA, but I suspect I wouldn't fare as well riding in a snowy area here.

Until you get up to the Sierras, the likelihood of snow on the ground in the Bay area & out to Sacto is very low. If there are salt-spreaders or snowplows, I've never seen one below the Sierras.

I'm old and was living in MA when a snowstorm in June came through & destroyed all the trees that had leafed out. Weird weather can happen.

I was living in MA and went home for Christmas via the back route thru Vermont. A sudden blizzard showed up and I rode back on 87 & 90 in howling winds & heavy snow, following scrapers & salt-spreaders. Freaked out a lot of motorists. :teeth
