Hawaiian food chain restaurant sues to prevent others using word Aloha

Just came across this article and from read a few sources. It seems like a non Hawaiian owner of a chain of Hawaiian restaurants is suing to prevent others from using the work Aloha and Poke in their restaurants. I would think that copyrighting such a combination wouldn't be enforceable. I would think it is something in the public domain, but I don't know shit about copyright laws. Seems like unreasonable cultural appropriation. Other wise I will start a company named golden gate.... and sue anybody to prevent them from using the words golden and gate in their names. I'll be rich!

it's not the words used individually

it's their combined usage

and yes, I see it being protected.

The Aloha Poke Company should be able to protect their product "Aloha Poke"

Now if you could show that you usage of the name existed before they received protections, you have a defense.

This is non-news. Why do people think this is a big deal? Sure they're common words, but they're in a specific order, in relation to an established business.

That would be like someone starting a burger joint called The Burger King and getting upset that the franchise Burger King sues them.

The disclosures about the cease-and-desist letters have resulted in calls to boycott the Chicago chain, including a petition to urge the company to drop the words from its name. A congressional candidate from Hawaii has issued a sharp rebuke on social media. And hundreds of angry commenters have flocked to the chain's social media pages to express their displeasure, accusing the company of cultural appropriation, of bullying small businesses, of disrespecting Hawaiian culture and well, not even making real poke in the first place.

Also, America took Hawaii by force and has the audacity to copyright some of its words? Hilarious. ;)

Aloha Poke from Chicago? Fuck off. :laughing

I remember my old VP coming into the wind farm office on the North Shore all pumped that he picked up a Make Spicy Poke at Home 3x5 recipe card at the Foodland.

"Wait a minute, where the fuck am I supposed to buy that in Buffalo?"
Reading the next line, "I don't even know what this ingredient is!"

good times :laughing

What the shit is this...
That little mini Mart on the North shore still has the best poke anywhere. Grammas recipe sauce, made in five gallon buckets and left to sit out back for six or seven years. So effing good.
