I have a ride in appointment at laam seats in redding on the 14th. He is going to make me something for my boney ass that hopefully is more comfortable. Those of you that have had a seat made is there anything you would have done different. Softer, harder, wider any info I should know. Thanks
On a side note, this is the longest solo ride I will have tried and I am a little nervous. I know I sound like a p..ssy but remember I have to use outriggers to hold me up when I stop. Should be an adventure one way or another.:teeth

Leather is slippery new or old.
It also cracks. It had 5-6 Corbin's made and the only one that I didn't like was leather . I chose it and always regretted it.
When the seat is "ready" but not covered. Ride the bike to make sure it's correct. The common problems are not level so you slide forward, the edges sharp so it bites your thighs, and a bump where your privates are.

Seth Laam will take good care of you. He will fashion a seat exactly to your liking.

He will recommend vinyl but will use leather if you want. Be clear as to your needs and he will build a seat that will work for you.

I had Seth build me a seat a year ago May and it is the best seat I have ever sat on (in 56 years of motorcycling).

I hope it's not too hot riding up through the Central Valley. :flame

I ordered a Corbin seat years ago and just got their standard product for a Ducati Monster. They made it a bit lower than stock when what I really would have liked was a taller than stock seat. If I were to ever do that again, I would ride down there and have them make it for me while I'm there.

Since you'll be there while your seat is made, you should be able to try it out a few times and have them adjust it to best meet your needs. I happen to like the more rounded shape of my KTM seat, and it has a couple of dips in it where the bones in my backside go. That works better than the stock seat on my XR.

Looking forward to how the seat comes out. I want a new seat for the Duc but am not sure what to get.

Taze away, Yana...
Sweet! He makes one hell of a seat.

Don't worry too much about the long solo, if you run into trouble, or your appointment goes too long, several of us Barfers are up north. Just ping me, and I'll get you sorted the best I can.

Also, Seth is a stickler for schedule. He will want you there at 8:00 am sharp (if you have a morning start). I rode up the night before and stayed at a local Redding hotel just to be sure I was on time. This did allow me to take 101 north from Ukiah and 36 over from Fortuna (at my own pace).

Beware Hwy 36 across.
Road Construction delays.

It has also been hot in Redding area (as usual) so early travel helps beat the heat.

I seriously doubt the original poster will touch any part of Highway 36 on this trip. And I suspect that the heat will be the number one issue in getting there and back. But he lives in Manteca, so he's probably used to it.

Yeah, it is a 3 1/2 hour ride from Manteca to Redding so if there is an 8:00 am appointment, leaving around 4:00 am or so would beat the heat.

Yes,probably going to leave at 4:15am. I thought about riding up the night before, but getting my wheelchair off my bike by myself is to sketchy. But I am still thinking about it. I have to deal with a lot of things that able body people never have to think of.

As a boney ass guy who needs a new seat for his current bike, I get it. On my last bike I had a custom seat made by Pirate Upholstery back east and loved it. I paid extra and he fitted quality gel inserts and it made a huge difference.

As for the comment about leather being slippery, it depends on what you are wearing. Leather vs. denim vs. some 70's silky basketball shorts can all be varying grips. One thing I will say is you can opt to have him flip leather inside-out. I had reversed 3oz cowhide and it was essentially like suede. Cooler in the heat, nice and grippy (I actually discovered I prefer some slide). The down side is it will likely color fade quicker in the sun. Up to you.

I just had a Corbin made. I rode down to the factory in Hollister. They use their own seat pan and have them ready for when you show up. The tech put it on my bike and told me to go ride it. I came back and told him it was too firm on my pelvic bones and I wanted more of a scoop. He scooped out some foam, glued in some softer foam and I rode it again. Perfect. They then cover it. I had the top done in leather and the sides in basket weave vinyl. I like the feel of leather. For me, it has just the right amount of grip and slide.

Hey Jesse, how'd your seat turn out?

I love it so far. I put 125 miles on it Sunday, that's my only ride so far. I have a two day ride planned for this weekend and will give you more feed back. Sunday's ride was the first time I have ridden and not had a sore tail bone. I think this is what the doctor ordered. Seth was real knowledgeable and easy to work with.

Kewl I may have to get a custom seat for my Empulse in the future, I don't like how it forces you onto the fake tank and it's like a 30 mile seat =(
