Has painting rocks become a thing?

So, I'm totally out of the loop on the whole social media thing. I never know if there is a thing that people are doing or if my neighbors are just being awesome on their own. During my walks around my neighborhood, I've been finding these painted rocks everywhere with supportive messages on them. I think they are kinda cute, and they have been putting a smile on my face.

I'm just wondering, is this some sort of wider social media movement, or is one (or more) of my neighbors just being awesome on their own?

Yes it's a thing around here, there's a page for "napa rocks" I've found them throughout the city, from parks to gas stations and around businesses.

Painting rocks, a thing.
Stacking rocks, a thing.
Having one as a pet, a thing.

Personally, after painting several hundred rocks while in basic training means it will never be a thing with me.

The "Stay at home" caption is new, but the painted rocks have been around for at least a couple of years in P-town and Livergulch.

They made you paint rocks in basic training? I've heard of peeling potatoes, but I've never heard of painting rocks in basic.

In college at UOP, various clubs, frats, and student orgs painted all the big rocks around campus all the time.

Tradition is to only paint them between midnight and 5AM and it's usually lowerclassmen and frat pledges.

Always loved that the University of the Pacific was in Stockton. They took the Greenland/Iceland approach.

Rocks have been painted for a long time.

I remember being able to buy rocks with messages way back to the Summer of love. So not knew. Maybe making a comeback.

Heck I found an example of a rock being used to issue social security #’s way back in the day. :p

:laughing Yes, the pacific is lovely over there this time of year.

(you can drive a car too)

Well, it's a hell of a lot closer to the Pacific than say Kansas.

Looks like it was originally in Santa Clara. Which also does not touch the Pacific. In fact, the county doesn't even technically touch the Pacific and you certainly cannot get a 900' Pacific-crossing ship into Santa Clara.

Does something need to be hanging off the edge of a cliff in Pacifica to be considered "Pacific"? :twofinger
