Back on November 10, 1775, the Marine Corps was founded on a bar napkin within the confines of Tuns Tavern Philadelphia, PA. Since this date, the Marine Corps has been fighting America's wars with honor and distinction though numerous acts of gallantry, courage, and selfless sacrifice.

With every graduating battalion, at the two Marine Corps recruit training facilities located at Parris Island, SC and San Diego, CA, the history and traditions of the Marine Corps are engrained in each new Marine to carry with them for the rest of their lives. The emphasis on the illustrious history of the Marine Corps highlights the fact that there is no such person known as an "Ex-Marine," but rather a "Former Marine." For this distinction, the motto of the Marine Corps, "Semper Fidelis," or "Always Faithful," lives forever in each Marine past and present, and therefore the Marine Corps also lives forever.

The 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Major General John A. Lejeune, signed into action Marine Corps Order 47 which would assist greatly in the formation of the current ceremony. The most visible event to celebrate the Marine Corps birthday is the ceremonial cake cutting event. During this action, the ceremonial cake is cut using the sword of a Marine. The slice of cake is then given to the oldest Marine present to show acknowledgement and respect for their years of service and dedication. The same piece is then passed from oldest Marine to youngest Marine present, to show the passing of knowledge and experience from one generation to another.

To date, the youngest possible Marine would have been born on May 11, 1994. (If my math proves accurate.)

Last Friday I celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday with 100 other former Marines at a luncheon at the San Mateo Elks Lodge. This was the 30th time this luncheon was held.

I cannot explain how it felt to be in the presence of those that went before me. There were many that served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iran, and Afghanistan. I was humbled by the calm yet commanding nature of these Marines. Same were POW's and others were injured in combat (many more than once). There were almost 10 Marines in attendance that were over the age of 80. The oldest was 93.

I sat at a table with a Marine that fought at the Chosin Reservoir. He left with 2 Purple Hearts. He demanded to return after he recovered from the first injury. He brought with him a 'young' Marine that he met when coaching a little league baseball team after the war. He was also this young man's Boy Scout Leader. This young man fought in Vietnam and returned.

There was an Air Force pilot in attendance that spent over 1100 days as a POW, many days in the Hanoi Hilton.

Happy Birthday to my fellow Marines.

Ooh Rah!

Death Before Dishonor.

My father was a Marine... the first song I learned to sing, when I was a little girl, was the Marine Corps Hymn... every word pronounced correctly... I didn't know where the Halls of Montezuma nor the Shores of Tripoli were, but I knew Marines had been there. Even at the age of 3, I knew there were none braver than the Marines!

Happy Birthday to the Corps, and Thank You to every Marine for your dedication and Valor!! Semper Fi! :flag
