I recently bought a pair of Motion Pro "Bead Pro" tire tools. They are available in either steel or tempered aluminum alloy, I got the aluminum version which are more expensive but lighter weight for carrying on the bike. Yesterday I had the chance to try them on a very stiff and stubborn 16" rear tire and they worked amazingly well both to break the bead and as tire irons to dismount and mount the tire.

I found them discounted at $58 on ebay. I like to be equipped to fix flats on the road, and these should be just the thing for breaking beads, at least better than flagging down another rider and using his side stand for the purpose. Another one of those things to carry around that I hope never to need!
