Gun storage recommendations

TheRiddler

Riddle me this.
I own a couple pistols and a single rifle and need a better way to store them. I'm not into guns, I'm not a collector, and don't plan to amass a bunch (or any) more. But as it stands, just keeping them in basic plastic travel carriers with locks on them doesn't seem sufficient. But I also don't want to drop $1000 on a fridge sized safe that will stay mostly empty forever.

Problems I'm running into:

1. I don't own my house, so bolting something into the floor is frowned upon.

2. I don't own a lot of guns, so I don't need anything gigantic.

3. I have a rifle (AR, 18" barrel), so I need something rifle-sized.

I don't need anything quick-access because I literally always have a gun in arm's reach. I'm considering a simple gun security cabinet. Open to suggestions.

If you don't want a safe, I'd suggest keeping the rifle in the padlocked plastic case, maybe adding a cable lock to tether it to the wall where you store it. For the pistols I'd suggest these or similar- I have 3 and they work well. Bolt them to furniture. None of those "gun storage cabinets" are any better than that plastic case IMO.

I used to have this Homak 6 gun safe 6-gun-steel-security-cabinet/ and kept it in my closet. Until I bought my own place then I got a larger safe. It did what I wanted, kept the guns away from the kids and I kept my important paperwork in it as well. A friend of mine wired up two Santa Cruz gun locks by his bed to keep his shotgun and rifle nearby, but I do t think that's what your after.

Think about an under bed gun safe/locking cabinet. It's a fine place for rifles, and you can easily take it with you when you move. And they're not too big.

Not so grizzled.
I'd suggest a 16-24 gun safe such as Sentry, Bighorn etc. Run over to Lowes, Home Depot, Costco and look at em in person. They are a litttle better than a security cabinet, not a lot more money and you'll find them handy for other stuff too. Looking at a few hundred $$s. $300 maybe? Also Craigslist for used ones. They are next to nothing in price.

Good place to stick a laptop when you're gone and any important documents.

Or two of their “Fast” boxes

For a single long gun that Fastbox looks like the right fit. Actually looking further into this you can do the vertical version and also store a couple of pistols in the top section.

For pistols and important documents you can pickup a small Sentrysafe at places like Costco.

The vertical option for the Fast Box works great. The medium bins hook directly into the rear of the box and hold all kinds of stuff including handguns.
But now that I think about it, one of them might be enough: vertical kit, long gun on one side, and two of these next to it for the handguns https://www.secureitgunstorage.com/product/single-pistol-peg/
With an 18’’ barrel there may not be a lot of space on top of it to use the bins, but the pegs will fit next to it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm leaning towards cheez's recommendation for cost, and tuxumino's for easy rifle access.

NP... the main reason I don't recommend those tissue paper gun cabinets is the false sense of security they give. I can open one in literally one minute using my favorite pry-bar. If you do wind up with one, keep in mind that bolting it down makes it easier to pry open. ;) I'm a much bigger fan of a proper gun safe.
