Guitar nuts, help! (see what I did there?)

Originally I was planning on getting just a standard MIM strat with a 9.5" neck, but I stumbled upon a players deluxe with 12" neck and only $100 more than a used MIM standard. The hardware and components on the players deluxe seem like a nice bump from the standard, I'm just not sure about the neck. I understand that I'll need to actually play the 12" to decide if it's right for me, but since I'm a novice, what should I be looking for? I've been playing for about 3 months and I'm primarily interested in Classic Rock.

This is the guitar:

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks,
Steve

There's no good reason the electronics in a Squire should cut in and out. Take it to a decent shop and they should be able to find the fault pretty easily (especially if it's the jack and it cuts in and out when you adjust the cord).

For the two MIM strats you mentioned, it really comes down to player preference. There have been lots of blind tests that show that the difference in guitar prices rarely effects any true difference in tone. (which isn't to say that there aren't differences between individual guitars).

The bottom line is, try the guitar, and if it feels and sounds the way you like, get it. If it isn't perfect, components can be swapped out, and the action and tone can be adjusted pretty easily.

I think the cost of professionally fixing the Squier would be about 100% of what I paid for it, so I'd rather leave it be and have an extra guitar to experiment on. :p It's really just an excuse for a new guitar. :teeth

The lady took her guitar to a local shop for a similar problem. They fixed it in like 20 minutes for $20.

You can buy yourself a new guitar if you want it, but I don't think it is a big deal to fix.

Bet it's either a crappy output jack or a bad pot. Could probably use a good setup too (actually, damn near all retail instruments could have at least their action and intonation correctly set, as well as getting the nut slotted correctly for whatever string gauge you settle on).

I can do all that. :)

That's a beautiful looking axe. Except I MUST have Texas Specials in my Strats lol. I love me some mid-range SRV twang:)

I'm not an engineer by any means but I've been able to sort what the issue was when a guitar was cutting in and out just by taking a look under the pick guard fairly easily. 9 times out of 10 times (ok, 8) somethings just loose. And, as mentioned above if it's a bad pot or something your looking and $50 tops.

But if you're just looking to throw $$$ around by all means....enjoy!

Yeah, I'd definitely pick up an LP somewhere down the road. Or maybe con my dad out of his all original 'ES335. :teeth

None of which has to do with Fender 12" necks. :laughing

Ok, I like the chunky feel of a 9" neck. Head down to Guitar Center, pick up both, and see which one you like better. :thumbup
