GSXR help

Hey, I pulled my 89 GSXR1100 out of storage today. It had some old gas in it, so I drained the tank and added new gas. When I started the bike, it idled fine, but when I gave it a little throttle it backfired and blew a little black smoke. I shut it off, took off the carbs and cleaned them thoroughly. When I put them back on, the bike would rev to around 5-6000 RPM, backfire and shoot flames until it died. It eventually overheated and would not start back up. Does anyone have any ideas of why it's doing this? By the way, when it was idling high and backfiring, it would rev fine if I gave it gas.

Edit: I added some seafoam to the gas after doing the carbs, could this be causing it?

POOP!!!
Check the carb boots, on a bike that old they may have cracked when you pulled the carbs... Or f'd something up in the reassembly...

Sounds like a lean issue...

Ok, I'll check it out. I took a look at the boots, don't look cracked. They're brand new, so they haven't dried out. I'm most concerned about the black smoke and backfiring.

king speed

It's good to be King
They are not clean...

The carbs, pilot jets, passages, something is not clean or clear. It can be a very small (air) restriction that will F the whole thing up. Disassemble every internal piece of the carbs, clean and blow air through everything. The black smoke is excess fuel, but the reason is hard to determine from here. Make sure the slides are clean, move smoothly and are oriented correctly, make sure the diaphragms are in one piece and seated properly. (Dont store the bike without draining the fuel from the carbs, line and tank.) Put fresh/clean fuel in it - just fuel.

It is running better now, the only issues are these. It backfires through the carbs a little (Little pops). It's idling a little high still, but not as high. Around 3500 RPMs. I adjusted the idle all the way out, but it didn't help. I looked for an air leak but couldn't find one. Anyone have any ideas?

Fixed it. The throttle cable adustment was out of whack, I still don't know what all the backfiring was about, but it runs perfect now. Thanks! :thumbup

You havta pay extra to get it to billow black smoke and shoot flames. :laughing
Congrats of repair. Interesting it was a throttle linkage. Havta put that one on the 'something wouldn't of thought of at first' list. :D
