Grandpa windscreen for STR

I've got a new job with lots of vacation and looking to do some more touring - problem is long rides on my 09 street triple make my neck (and subsequently shoulders/upper back) too sore to handle now that I'm getting older.

Bike has too many miles to sell at this point (>65k now) so I'd rather just keep it and use it as a touring machine. Is there an aftermarket windscreen that will actually block helmet wind well for a big guy (6'2) like me?

If it's not your choice for touring, don't keep it just because its resale value is low: you could sell it cheap, and replace it with a bike more like what you want to ride that has a similar value, if necessary, or higher value if you prefer.

If I were to try to tour on that bike I think I'd get pain in the same places, but would address it with risers, not a big screen. I'd also expect knee pain.

If you think a screen is all you need though, give it a try.

Not sure if they have a remedy for your specific bike but I got the same on my FJ R as wind pushed my head down with stock screen. Went to Calsci in Sacramento and they had several.options ...good for me ...although almost to tall.....

Dont like wind ?
Get a FJR. Great big guy bike, too. Add a Cee Bailey screen for zero wind.

Not a ballerina but a seriously fast wind cutter.

I have the Dart windscreen on my 09 Street Triple. While I like the screen, it wont do what you want. I did a search a number of years ago and there wasnt anyone making a "touring" type screen for the street triple. Madstad is probably the closest, but its for the newer 12+ wink eyed headlights. Though I imagine it could be modified to work.

Off the shelf, I dont think you will find what you are looking for but I could be wrong if some one has since started to make one.

There have been folks who have modified some of those "universal" type touring screens. Might be your best bet.

Good luck and post up where you end up with a screen. :thumbup

Ok, if you don't get an FJR...

I had to find a screen for my R1200R BMW that I could use to cut the blast so my ruined neck wouldn't cause me misery. (see? There are other oldies here with worn-out necks)

The MRA Vario has a spoiler that can be adjusted to suit your needs. It doesn't totally eliminate wind, but I can ride my R12 at 95-ish and it's tolerable.
Since you are much taller than little old me, you'll need to use a different spoiler angle than I do.

I bet someone else here has had good luck with the MRA Vario Touring screen. I am not sure if they make a specific screen for your bike but they do have mounting options for just about every bike.

I have the MRA V-FLOW with the X-Creen spoiler. It's similar to the Vario posted above. It works ok the mounting system is great. It didn't quiet the ride on my Empulse like I thought it would I'm believe that the aerodynamics sucks on the Empulse at least for a quiet ride. Some bikes just have crappy aerodynamics because my ZR7 seems quieter naked than my Empulse. The spoiler is nice you can adjust it to try and get that air to go over your helmet or wherever you want it.

I've got a knock off version of the X-Creen spoiler purchased on amazon for $37 mounted to my ST1100. Works pretty damn good and this thread has me thinking I should try it on the Street Triple's Dart windscreen.

How much riding do you do each week? What do you consider a "long" ride? Better conditioning or a lighter/more aerodynamic helmet might be all you need to be more comfortable... I've owned a couple of touring-capable bikes over the last ten years and noticed that if you try to go directly from riding the couch to riding 400+-mile days you're going to be hurting no matter what machine you're on!

All good points. Though I don't think a Street Triple is a promising bike for most older riders to ride all day, day after day.

As an older guy with neck and back issues, I did need to change helmets to manage neck pain, and also stop using helmet mounted camera.

There are bikes I feel the distance less than others on. For example I never remember feeling it at all on my Versys. But I was commuting regularly.

A look through barn door screen isn't a terrible thing--except in appearance, and cross winds. And it has an advantage in the evening when the clouds of bugs appear. Better splattered on the windscreen than faceshield or teeth. I probably won't use one again, but the OP might like it.

For me anyway, a small screen seems like enough. As long as the helmet has a decent wind profile, wind itself doesn't seem terrible, though with the wrong screen setup, buffeting can be.

I've used an MRA touring screen like discussed above on a bike before, and it worked great for me without the flap at the top. I figured if I needed more I'd add the adjustable flap. But I didn't. The MRA X-creen can be added to the top of many windscreens.

I still think a different bike is a better bet though.

I've got a previous upper back issue that's mostly resolved, but since then I notice the wind really takes a beating on my neck in general on longer (300+ mile/day multi day) rides. I do about 50 miles/day commuting on it, I actually have the ergos set up to be pretty comfortable in general.

I like everything else about the bike - handling, power, suspension etc but definitely feel it from the wind on the helmet at highway speeds for extended periods lately.

I considered selling it but figured if a 2-300$ option would solve the only issue then why not? I just wanted some ideas on actual screens that might fit the bill.

If it doesn't then sure, I can sell it in good faith and pick up an older strom or a tiger 800 or something along those lines for touring duty.

Edit: also I used my track helmet the other day and that improved it significantly on a ride up the coast - so I'll probably make that switch also.

Get a real full fairing touring bike.

I've had a fz6 and a tuono v4, and bagillion sportbikes.

Multiple windscreen changes on nekkid bikes still never compared to full fairing covering headlight bikes.

Sounds like the issues we have been going through; my lady rides a naked Monster, and the ergos are pretty good for her, but wind buffeting on longer rides was an issue.
She changed helmet to a Shoei Air-GT and that helped a lot, and we will add an MRA touring screen to her bike.
