Its way more fun when you play at a course. When playing at a course, just remember to keep up with the group in front of you or let the group behind you play through (if they're waiting on you).

You shouldn't even be touching a driver until you can consistently hit your 6 or 7 iron.

Sure! JMack has been tempting me to go play and kick his butt so I'll drive all the way for some golf. Besides, it's gotta be cooler down there than up here.

i was told to look at tgw.com for some good deals. found a set for around 300 that would be good for a beginner

^ well if you're going to be shopping online, then ebay is a good bet. Like everything else, you gotta know a little bit about the product. Shipping costs might be high but it's accepted. www.edwinwattsgolf.com is reputable as well. Look for the clearance stuff, as the new stuff might be a tad high. Since you're in Sac too there's Wide World of Golf and Tennis off Fair Oaks near the Pavillions. Good stuff there.

Count me in, just started playing again after years off. Used to play alot back in high school(was on the team) and lets just say my currents skill level is an embarrasement! haha. I'm down to catch a 9 hole shorth course with some of you guys so I can get back in the swing off things before venturing out to the big dog courses again.

Don't worry about how far you can hit it. Just make sure that whatever distance you hit it is consistent. When you get out on the course on a 150-yard par 3, you want to say that you hit your 7-iron 150 yards. You don't want to pull out your 7-iron wondering if you're going to get 125 yards or 150 yards.

Exactly. Ego is a bad thing on a golf course. If you consistently hit a 7 140ish and you're inside the white pin on the golf course, the 7 should be the club you grab... no hestitation (unless of course there's wind and other factors). Depending on what I ate that day, how well I'm swinging, how tight my shoes are, I'll hit a 7 about 150. No more.. no less.

Now... 125 to 150 is quite variation for a 7. Swing the club about 80% of your ability. Don't hit all out. Save some. Then create or guesstimate an average of what that club does so when the time comes and you need to hit that 140 yd shot, that the 7 is there for ya. Lemme know if you wanna go out. I'm probably hitting worse now than ever since I'm playing tennis too much.

And older Wilson's are fine. If they're blades and you can play those instead of cavity backs, you're fine. Don't fork out cash for clubs unless you're serious. Golf is one sport that can get expensive real fast.

Here's another tip that will save you a lot of money on the range too. You need to learn to do the exact same thing before every shot. Your pre-shot routine needs to be identical whether you're on the course or if you're at the driving range. It helps build muscle memory, and it will help you calm down when you're in the course. If you watch Tiger Woods or any other PGA tour player, each of them has a slightly different pre-shot routine, but they all have one that they use on every shot.

A lot of beginners tend to get away from this on the driving range, and they end up blowing through a large bucket in 10 minutes effectively wasting 75% of the bucket. The pre-shot routine will make that bucket last much longer, and it will settle down each and every swing. Just like on the golf course, you need to get to the point where every swing at the ball even on the driving range counts. You don't want to just get over the ball and swing.

My pre-shot routine is this:

1. Stand a few feet behind the ball and look for an intermediate target between your target and the ball. (typically 3 - 6 feet in front of the ball.)
2. Move up next to the ball but 2 feet away.
3. Take 2 practice swings.
4. Move forward and align club with ball with left hand only.
5. Step forward and align with feet together.
6. Move left foot into position.
7. Move right foot into position.
8. Grip club with both hands.
9. Look up and reverify alignment with intermediate target.
10. Take two breaths.
11. Swing.

I do this before every single shot on the course and on the driving range. You need to pick a routine and stick to it.

We'll talk about swing thoughts later....
