Going up to Sacramento in a few weeks for a business trip, what are some good roads to ride?

Agree that riding in the Delta can be a nice relaxing ride. Best to go with a full tank and explore. Get off Hwy 160 and ride around the sloughs and islands that make up the interesting parts of the Delta. Consider skipping over to the west side of the river at the bridge south of Courtland. Head over to Hwy 84 and take the the smaller ferry on the east side of Ryer Island. Stop and check out all the waterfowl. There is a lot to see.

Watch for afternoons because of drunk fishermen.

I know a lot of these routes including my suggestion focus on the foothills. Lots of great riding in the foothills, but if you are right in downtown Sacramento it really is easier and quicker to get to Berryessa on a week night than battle the commute toward the foothills.

If you decide to ride down through the delta don't forget to take some bug remover with you especially during the evening hours.

Great suggestions guys!

I ended up doing these:

Day one

Day two

There are some absolutely lovely little old towns in the foothills, can't wait to go and do a proper trip through the Sierras!

Did you like Mosquito Road out of Placerville? That bridge at the bottom and the first few hairpins are something else. I miss riding in that area.

Looks like you had a couple of great rides. :ride

The road itself was too bumpy for my taste, but the scenery, town, and especially that bridge and hairpins were well worth the ride!

You are getting some good advice here. So many good roads off the main highways... FYI Sand Ridge road has a short gravel section, 2-3 miles? It's been awhile since I hit it.

This is one I do when I am short on time. But I don't have to drive from downtown.
