What's your go to bait for ocean fishing off a pier? I am hoping to catch sea bass.

I caught some mackerel to use but am looking for tried and true baits :laughing

Depends on the pier. At Pacifica when I am targeting stripe bass/salmon I will sabiki up smelt, sardines and/or anchovies. Salmon hasn't ran through Pacifica Pier for awhile and I haven't caught any keeper stripe bass myself but have seen them caught and landed at Pacifica Pier.

I haven't had any luck using frozen bait at Pacifica Pier with exception of squid when targeting dungies.

No I don't. I only use additives/stink on my lures. If you cut up the bait just leave the guts (I usually have to miracle thread them so they stay intact) and the juices/blood will attract fish. Keeping them alive and nose hooking the bait and throwing them back in the water has been more successful (for me at least).

Blood worms are good.
I find squid is great but it's too great. Everything seems to love squid. I hate snagging rays/skates.

Mackerel hit the squid like mad, hooked up a steel lead with double hooks, put a live mackerel on one and squid on the other hook. Now sitting pretty watching the boats roll by.

Wish me luck!

Good luck.
Sounds like a great evening.

I have been bitten by the fishing bbug recently. I am going to dust off my float tubes and have some fun.

Pretty much this. But don't waste you time. Pier fishing....sucks.

Get an 8ft medium action rod, spool it up with 20lb braid, and go hit up some surf for perch. And get either some candy crabs, or Berkeley Gulp sandworms.
