Gloves are wearing out, options?

My Motoboss gloves, after two years of commuting, road trips, and weekend rides, have started to split the seams on the palms. Noticed this when i put them on this morning... some of the leather has pulled away from the seams slightly. Makes them ventilate better... but if I go down they'll shred instead of abrade down, leaving my hands at the mercy of the asphalt.

However.... I'm on an EXTREME budget right now, got all the beginning-of-month bills, plus I just had a monitor die on one of my computers. So I don't know if I can justify spending $50 on a new pair of gloves.

Anyone ever used duct or electrical tape to secure their gloves before the seams get too ripped? I'm thinking of multiple wraps a la boxing... just wondering if it would cause issues if I go down.

The monitor situation I can muddle thru... the foster kid is going to get my laptop (once I clean all the pr0n off of it, hehehe!)...

I dunno, I thinks I shall swing by Cycle Gear and see what's on sale. Perhaps I can get a replacement pair for less than I'm thinking it will cost.

Now, I'm NOT bagging on these gloves. They've seen HEAVY use in all sorts of weather for two years. I think I got my money's worth on them.... I'm just looking for options to keep using them for the next three weeks, when the next paycheck comes in (the one I can actually spend $$ from...)

If the leather is failing, rather than the seams, I'd suggest that it's time to get new gloves! BTW, how lond do you think duct tape lasts when abrading against pavement at 60mph? Milliseconds?

If you can't scrape $50 together for a pair of cheap gloves, maybe you should put off riding until you can? Either way, it seems like a small price to pay given what could happen if you crash and your current gloves fail...

Check out GP* on eBay.

I just ordered a jacket from them and it seems to be pretty good quality. There was a thread on here about a month ago and poeple said their gloves were great.

Here's the link:

GP Star eBay Link

Their customer service is awesome, and shipping is a flat rate of 2.95.

Hey Deacon,

I have a pair of Frank Thomas gloves that were starting to fall apart. The seams were failing and the leather was too. I took the gloves to a shoe repair store and he patched them up really well for only $8.00 Because of the "armour" in the gloves, a regular tailor wouldn't touch them, something about a one sided stich machine or something. Anyway, try a Cobbler before you toss them away.

I bought some Alpinestars gloves, size large, 2 weeks ago at RoadRider. They are way too tight on me, make my hands and fingers look like little sausages when I finally take them off. I just bought some XL's to replace them, BUT I'm not going back to road rider anytime soon to get my money back, so the gloves are for sale. Used 3 or 4 times, still look brand spankin' new. I believe they were like 80 bucks. I can get you the specifics on what model they are and pics if interested, $40.

What size monitor went bad?

I have a 15 inch viewsonic that I haven't used in years that you can have for free. I also have a 21 inch dell that is a little blurry but not too bad that you could also have for free.

<I live near Alhambra Valley Rd and Castro Ranch rd, which should be just down the road from you>
