Gixxer Sliders

I picked up frame sliders, bar-end sliders, and the spool sliders for the Sixxer today. Unfortunately the bar-end sliders were not the correct part so I'll have to go back and get the right ones. Otherwise...

Spool Sliders (aka: swingarm sliders, but not as big)
Simple installation. Just put the bolt through the slider, put a dab of loctite on the threads, put the bolt into the hole on the swingarm meant for swingarm spools, tighten. I torqed mine to 20 ft/lbs. Now tighten the pinch bolt back up. I didn't torque it as I was using a standard allen wrench, but it's tight.

Frame Sliders
The right side is the easy one on the Gixxer. Loosen the pinch bolt (mine was nice and chewed up - compliments of the factory) and then remove the engine mounting bolt. Put the new slider in and tighten the bolt. Make sure you align the notch in the slide to it doesn't hit the fairing. I couldn't find the specs anywhere (Mstingray - I really could have used that manual today - heh) but searching various sites I decided to torque it down to 40 ft/lbs.

The left side isn't as easy. You need to remove all the lower fairing bolts but you don't actually have to remove it completely. Pull the engine bolt out and place the bracket into the orifice (I just love that word). DO NOT install the slider at this time, just the bracket. As you tighten the bracket into place it would be worthwhile to test fit the slider by pulling the fairing back into place - you want to ensure the bracket is pointing the right direction when you finish. Having aligned everything the bracket should stop moving when you are ready to torque the engine bolt back down. Again, I went to 40 ft/lbs. Put the fairing back on and then tighten the slider onto the bracket. There is no torque spec, but once it's snug give it an extra cinch and it should hold in place.

I do have to mention that my fairing is bulging out a bit from the bracket so I may need to cut it after all. I'm going to have the dealer check it out when they do the service next week.

Hope this is helpful somewhere down the line for someone looking for tips.

IIRC, the torque specs are 39.8ft lb. i torqued mine to 40 too cause i don't have a small increment torque wrench. when i had the six, the left fairing also bulged out slightly as well.

theSteveCo,

I've been thinking about getting spool sliders for my bike...what brand did you get? I'm looking at the Intuitive ones.

How durable are the spool sliders? Do you think that using a spool rear stand, that it would dig into the resin-type material and eventually wear down? That's my only concern. Thanks for your input!

I believe mine are Intuitive. As for durability, I can't say how well they'd hold up. :confused

i too have the intuitive sliders which use the bracket. thesteveco, i would suggest that maybe you switch to the sliders that use no bracket. i plan on buying the race version where you cut the fairing and after seeing someone take a fall on the side with the bracket, you might switch too. a fall on the side with the bracket may lead to more costly damages than just fairings....

i've heard that the bracketed sliders can possibly break off the mount in the frame. i also heard that a non-bracketed slider can break off the mount as well. the sliders put all the pressure of the fall onto 1 point on the bike for the most part rather than the whole side of the fairing.

FYI, i crashed at 100mph+ on the bracketed slider and it didn't break. though i slid into the grass where the bike proceeded to flip...:rolleyes

So would I be correct in assuming these will work the same as
regular spools for use with a center stand?

they worked fine w/ my handy stands. a friend of mine has the pitbull rear spool stand and it looks like iffy if the sliders would fit. then again, i haven't looked at the pitbull stand closely.

On my F4i, I had to cut the fairings. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The worst was the fear of jacking up the hole... I'm not too mechanically inclinded, but I did them myself using the Play-Do method. They came out perfect. My friends thought that I had it done at the shop... If you need any help, lemmie know...
