Geysers Road, Cloverdale KOA ...

I think the gravel sections are there because the road condition deteriorated to the point where it was better to tear out the asphalt and lay gravel. The gravel is in just a few places and not more then 50-100 yards and in good condition. No worries for a sport bike.

... yes, that was the experience we
had on our street bikes ... :cool

I came over Fish Rock Rd. from the coast as part of a great ride with a couple of friends on Saturday afternoon then had a bite to eat near Cloverdale. It would have been a kick to run into you!

There is beautiful scenery and great riding all over the place in NorCal. Good for you guys on (always) getting out there. :thumbup

... would have been super-cool
to cross paths ... :thumbup

... Mt. Patterson expedition over/near the July 4th weekend ...? :ride

Excellent, glad the voucher will be put to use:thumbup

I only got to drive that car once and that was like 20 years ago for maybe a total of 5 miles.. They were pretty protective of that car.:laughing

And once again, your pictures inspire me to go explore. Between you and CB-1Guy, I mean GB500guy, I reminded of all the beautiful roads right in our back yard.

happy riding

... I want to be like "CB1guy" when I grow up ... :thumbup:laughing

... I've never even got to sit in a 911 ...
pretty cool to get the chance to drive one ...
Cary's nephew got a job pushing a broom
at an independent Porsche shop when he
was 14 y/o and wound up completely restoring
a '79 Targa by the time he went off to college
... restored as in had to buy a used motor
and strip it to the cases to get the cracked mounting
tabs welded up ... has some cool pics of himself
up to his elbows rebuilding the engine ... :cool

... will keep you posted about Vichy voucher ... :ride

Great report and glad you enjoyed my town (Cloverdale), our quaint Citrus Fair as well as the surrounding roads.

If you were at the fair Sunday I was pouring beers in the Lion's Club beer booth.

... have to say Cloverdale has really
grown on me over the years ... got
used to it at the BBQ place at the
intersection of Hwy 128 ... the Citrus Fair rocks ...
this trip we had the fun experience of a local
coming up to us at Plank Coffee and saying
"Hey, saw you guys at the Chinese New Year yesterday!" :laughing

... he wound up asking us to
babysit his puppy while he went
inside with his gf to get out of the cold ... :party

... be fun to catch up with you
at the Lion's Club beer booth next year ... :thumbup

Junkie

gone for now
... fun info about the steel bridges I've been riding
by for so long ... didn't realize they were so much
older than 1909 ... :thumbup

Geysers Road would be a ton of fun on a super-moto WR450! :ride
to be pedantic: those bridges are largely made of cast iron rather than steel, as steel was far more expensive when they were made.

Oddly enough the Caltrans Historic Highway Bridges of California book (published 1990) lists manufacture date for Haupt Creek (on Skaggs) as 1880, so I wonder why the signs are different. It also says that there are 4 Phoenix column bridges in CA, the 3 I mentioned and then Burger Creek Bridge in Mendocino County, so they aren't exactly common. If you look at the compression members (any upright or diagonal that isn't skinny), you'll see that it's a round tube made up of 4 sections of a circle, with flanges, riveted together. That's a Phoenix column. They didn't have a way of casting (or otherwise forming) a tube, so they made one out of 4 pieces instead.

I haven't made the trek up there on the WR, only on the SV. I imagine my ass would strongly dislike me for a couple days after...

ha, no, that’s awesome! so much fun to learn about
things like the Phoenix Column ... here’s a pic of
the Gualala Bridge that kind of shows the four piece,
riveted construction ...

... learned that it’s named after the Phoenix Iron Works
back in my part of the world...
(neat to read about the Calhoun Street Bridge, a Phoenix Bridge Company span in Trenton, New Jersey,
part of the Lincoln Hwy and my old home town ...)

The Phoenix Column, patented by Samuel Reeves in 1862, was a hollow cylinder composed of four, six, or eight wrought iron segments riveted together. The resulting column was much lighter and stronger than the solid cast iron columns of the day. They allowed the construction of massive structures without brutally heavy load-bearing walls. Taller and taller buildings could now be built on narrow urban plots, helping facilitate the creation of the skyscraper and high-stress-load-bearing bridges.

... here’s Bridgehunter.com links to the
Gualala Bridge, the Geysers Road Bridge and
the Philo Greenwood Road Bridge where
we had lunch on Saturday ... was able to use the google street-view
on the Geyers Rd link and get a pretty good look
at its Phoenix Columns ... the Gualala link
has the best comments at the bottom ...
Haupt Creek has an entry as does
the funny little bridge on Usal Road ...

... can’t wait to see one of the California
Phoenix Column bridges again so
I can take a good look ... :thumbup

... and what a treasure that
Bridgehunter.com site is ... :ride

... thanks for the post! :hail

Hey John / Junkie, you guys seem to be in the know, is the road after the Gualala bridge private? Last time I was riding up there, after I passed the bridge there were so many, hand painted, "private" signs that I ended up turning around, but I wasn't convinced that road was actually private. Either of you know?

That's so cool, I'd love to have an old 70's 911..actually any air cooled 911 or a 96 era...or an old speedster, actually the list goes on:laughing

... I don't know for sure/can't remember specifically about the Gualala road,
but in general I only turn around when the sign says "private road" ...
if the signs just say private or no trespassing I assume
they are referring to the land beside the throughway ... :dunno
... locked gates work pretty well for private roads ... :laughing

... it was neat to see pics of his engine apart ...
they have six individual air-cooled motorcycle-looking finned
cylinders ... think I'd just hurt myself in an old 911 ... :facepalm

There are many people who put those signs up in an attempt to keep others off "their" roads despite them being very public. More often than not I ride until there is a gate :ride

I love your trip reports, they really are the best!

... thanks for reading and posting, Chill! :thumbup

... one more Phoenix Column pic ...

... see you in Taft ...

This is awesome, close yet far away.

We were up on Geysers Rd. a few years back when a big 4 door 4wD diesel truck began tailgating us mercilessly. We were in the Sprinter and pulled over at the first opportunity. The truck slowed and four, looking very large, men stared at us menacingly. What's really weird is that the truck had Mexico Campeche plates. Gave me shivers.

Perhaps it's time to go back.

I probably bought a beer (or three) from you. We were there on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (my wife and I have the Friendly Farm animal exhibit).
