Getting used to the Bay

Hello all,

I moved here from the NYC area in June 2018 for a new job and have only had time for a little bit of riding so far. Unfortunately, I broke my leg e-skateboarding shortly after arriving...guess I was trying to be a little too Cali for a newcomer.

From the little riding I have done (mostly up by Point Reyes) the roads here are gorgeous and so much nicer than anything I’ve experienced on the East Coast. Really looking to get out more now that the weather is better.

I have been a member of a club in Brooklyn, called Jupiter’s Motorcycle Club, have been riding since 2005 (though I’m 47 now, so started a little later in life and didn’t grow up riding). To improve my riding, I took California Superbike School last year and completed the first level. I did the day at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Milleville, NJ, so after a taste of the track I am looking to do some track days out here and have a little dream of eventually hitting Laguna Seca.

I currently ride a 2013 BMW F800GS. I’m also an Eagle Rider Club member, so I occasionally will rent something else. I am interested in selling my current bike and upgrading to something I can mainly use for sport touring and can also take to the track. I’m thinking a KTM 1290 Superduke GT or Ducati Multistrada 950S. At least that is the current pan. Would also consider a lightly used BMW K1300S.

I am really looking forward to taking some rides down to Carmel and Big Sur this summer. I have a buddy down in LA and, if I get the new bike, I may take a trip all the way down this summer. TBD.

I look forward to meeting more riders as I don’t have anyone to go riding with here. Hopefully, will make some new friends soon.

-Josh

Enjoy the barf!

I happen to have a lightly used K1300S that I have considered selling for a few years. Less than 6K miles actually. :facepalm

One of these days I will get to selling it..:laughing

I hope you enjoy the forum and find many smiles with your miles!

Don't wait for summer for that ride down the coast. This time of year is ideal!

I'll let you in on a little secret about West Coast riding. As nice as highways 1 and 101 can be, the real gems are the little roads through the coast range that connect the coast with inland areas. Go ride that coast road, and keep in mind those little roads you see heading back up into the hills can be just brilliant. :ride

Welcome to the Bay Area. I spent 25 years there (plus 5 in Folsom) before moving on. And I was in NYC just last week - mostly in Manhattan. I bet I didn't see half a dozen motorcycles being ridden while there.

Moving from an F800GS to a 1290 SuperDuke GT is a huge jump. I've test ridden one of those and thought that it had way too much power everywhere. It was evil fast. :laughing But if you can control your right wrist it is a very capable bike.

I would suggest heading to Carmel the first chance you get, then ride Highway 1 all the way to Cambria, where the good stuff ends for a bit. That is the most scenic piece of road that I've ever been on and I travel around quite a bit. Do it one time, then start taking the back roads as suggested. You can take Highway 46 back if you've had enough twisties once you get down there. It's a fantastic day trip if you don't mind a 450 mile day.

Welcome from another east-coaster (PA). You are correct Sir, these are the best roads in our nation, just my opinion.

Welcome to the Yay! I moved here (santa cruz) last June as well. I'm from Missouri. Just got back into riding last week. Bought myself a 93 Honda XR600. We have lots of dirt roads and farm roads around here and guys are riding plated dirt bikes/dual sports.
