General Forum Stickies

Change my view:

1 sticky with a link to (and description/update-date thereof) the current list of stickies would be better than nearly half the front page being stickies.

Seems like 1 thread with a title that shows "last updated" would be better.

Happy Monday, everyone! :thumbup

Was thinking something similar recently. There's an awful lot of stuff stuck up there at the start of the general forum page.

there is no win with this question. it's an Oil, Tires, Chain/sprocket, Nitrogen vs air, thread wrapped up in a Dickbut package.

Nobody would read it. At least people see the titles this way.

What we need is new forum software that will run ajax scripts so the stickies can hover over your screen and you can't dismiss them...

Not as fast as I look.
My feeling is that folks will not read a single thread that say important thread in this thread.

I try to keep them limited, and removed time sensitive ones and move them to this thread http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457918

Have you guys ever even looked at that thread??
And why do you think they would read a dozen threads in a row at the top that never change? This issue has come up on other forums. And too many stickies is not popular. There may be too many sections, but the stickies are out-of-control. I don't even look to see if there are more or less sticky threads.

I think it hurts new reader and older reader participation. Why not move all these to the "Important Announcements" section that stays at the top of the entire forum? This will get to everyone, not just those in "General". If someone does a web search that takes them to "DirtBike" or "Racers Corner", et al, they are never going to see all those stickies anyway. So your whole purpose evaporates unless someone goes to general. Might as well just make them go to the "Helpful Announcement" section. And mabye those stickies should cycle to the newest being pushed to the top.

This is pretty much what I was shooting for.

Once you get beyond 2 or 3 people tend to gloss over them. I only made this thread b/c I happened to notice a couple news ones since the last time I looked like 6 months ago.

If there was 1 sticky with a date that gets updated when new threads are added/removed, I'd look at it each time the date changed.

We of course have stickies in most forums that are specific to those.

I have opened a conversation on this with the Mod Core.

If everyone sent Budman a reminder once the number of sticky threads got past six or eight (it's at nine currently), I'm sure he would move the older ones into the general sticky thread. I've done it enough times that Budman replied indicating that he was expecting it from me. :laughing

I like the idea of the sticky threads being organized by age, that would make it easier to spot something new. It would also make it more obvious which ones have been there too long - six months is too long for most of them.

A few need to stick around permanently:
  • If you crash or break down, & need help getting your bike home...
  • General Forum Important threads stickie -- find info here [should be permanently the last one]
We probably don't really need two stickies on lane splitting.

And that one about THE BONE should really be retired by now.

That's my opinion on the subject. :)

The sticky on the CHP guidelines and helmet fitment will be moved soon with a link to ours put in.

Believe it or not the bone one is still very active. Just because people do not reply does mean it is not. I watch the clicks go up every day and there has been 500 in the last month. So just because a reply has not been done recently does not mean that it is old per say.

Thanks for chiming in Scott.

Now there are 7 :teeth

there what you write "NO OIL" on and cover your ignition with because you forgot to get a replacement crush washer and the old one is wafer thin and twice it's original diameter, but you waited till six oclock on a saturday night to do your oil change and have to wait till tuesday to go by the shop to get a crush washer.
