gas for highway 36

Ive wanted to ride highway 36 for a while but whats stopped me is the distance and lack of gas stations. It would be pushing the reserve in my gsxr to its absolute limit, unless I ride in a higher gear and real low rpm. Ive read that theres only one gas station about 40 miles in but it doesnt have supreme (?) so everyone says to just top off in red bluff. I was probably going to bring a couple of these MSR fuel bottles http://www.amazon.com/MSR-MSRFUELBOTT-Fuel-Bottle/dp/B002L1413S so Id atleast have an extra half gallon, I just have to figure out how to mount them. Other than not riding hard, are there any other options? or any other gas stations?

I did it on a GSXR 750 a couple years ago and i wasn't exactly babying the throttle. There was a little store with gas, I don't think my low fuel light came on before making it to gas. There were sections I would have loved to turn around and redo if I had the range, that part kinda sucked. I don't remember if they had premium or not, I don't recall. The bike's engine will detect it if you put 89 in and adjust for it, its not gonna hurt anything. I put in whatever was at the station and was fine.

There are enough options along the way. Get gas on either end and there will be gas at two or three different places along the way. Hayfork is on rt 3 off 36 via a very nice road and there is gas there too.
Another place is near one of the airstrips where there is a general store -forgot the name but it is about an hour East of Hwy 1.

It is remote so bring water and buddy ride if possible.

I would not ride it until Oct due to the heat. I did ride it in June and it was 100 degrees.

Just put regular gas in your tank, 1 tank of non "premium" fuel isn't going to hurt anything and it's easier then carrying around MSR bottles.

36 is worth it.

I've never seen anyone run out there. I think from premium to premium is about 120 miles. Buy an octane booster and put a gallon of regular in. I've seen many gsxrs and supersports on it. Dtrides has an appropriate tuono, known for poor range, and he is a very fast rider. He rides it regularly without getting regular. I'm only a couple hrs from it, pm me if you choose to go.

Check with caltrans before going 36 has been closed for the last couple of weeks due to fires.

How come?

Closed 58 miles E of 101

Could you elaborate? Fire?

For the OP...

If you see reference to Wildwood Store, it burnt and has been closed for quite some time. There are spots with fuel but if worried, might be wise to KNOW there scheduled hours.

As mentioned, a tank of regular ain't gonna kill your engine and a small container of Octane booster is easier than packing a couple of fuel bottles.

The road is worth the trip. Even if hot. :thumbup

So I mapped out the gas stations; Platina, Hayfork and Dinsmore. Hayfork appears to have premium so it looks like Ill be ok either way. now the next question is, can you do it in a day from the east bay. Its a 10+ hour loop and 600 miles, im not sure my butt can handle that :laughing

Hwy 36 is closed to non resident traffic starting 58 miles east of 101 due to the fires. This weekend, I camped at Grizzly Peak Redwood State Park, about 15 miles east of 101. Trinity, Mendo and Sonoma counties are all very smoky. I would avoid until things clear up a bit. If you have to go, keep your eye on the location of the fires and the wind direction. Rode down 101 today and it was brutal. You can go to the Cal Fire site and get more information on the numerous road closures.

dravnx- Thanks for the detail. Much appreciated. Have some time off and love taking a 36/299 loop, but perhaps not the best of timing.

We are experiencing distinct haze from what is likely the fires in Lake County and elsewhere. Makes for pretty sunsets, if looking for lemonade amongst the lemons.

That loop has been done before by sport bikes, but its a long day. Time of day is a factor too. 36 has some tar snakes that are less of a factor in the morning before they get hot and greasy. Its still worth riding even if its hot, just takes the pace down a little.
