Collision With Car Kills 1 Motorcycle Rider, Injures Another
A 37-year-old Pacific Grove man was killed and a 61-year-old Monterey man was injured when their motorcycles struck the side of a car making a U-turn Monday afternoon on state Highway 1 in Monterey County, the California Highway Patrol said.

Shortly before 2 p.m. a 37-year-old Riverside woman parked in a gray 2015 Honda on the shoulder of southbound Highway 1 just north of Garrapata Creek Bridge started to make a U-turn thinking the lane was clear.

The turn went into the path of a Pacific Grove man on a black 2010 Yamaha and a Monterey man on a black 2015 BMW, who were both traveling about 55 mph and unable to avoid the car.
Stupid, ignorant woman took away a life because she was too careless.

Don't ever trust anybody in a position to cause you harm, there are too many careless people out there who won't bother to look ensure they won't do something like this to you.

Watched my buddy crash into a U turner a year ago this past June. He'll never ride again. Paralyzed in his right arm. Fuck U turners. I am extra cautious of cars parked on the side of the road. I watch for brake lights.

Awful.

Condolences to family and friends of the dead rider and hoping the surviving ride has a swift and full recovery.

I don't think I'd ride again after witnessing a friend die like that on a ride.

I have stopped riding HWY1 south of Carmel. 'Oh shit' moments every single time I went out there. The last few months have been absolutely insane in terms of crowds and cars not giving a f*** when they u-turn, left-turn, stop, pull over, go slowly etc.

Traffic used to be lighter once you got past the main Big Sur area, but now it is busy all the way to Lucia.

Even if paying extreme attention and going under the speed limit, hitting a u-turner won't end well....

Horrid experience. Such a good dude. :(

I still ride it.. and yeah extra attention when ever there are cars on the side of the road, which is often. For sure a huge awareness protocol in place.

Oh man, that's horrible. Good reminder to ride at a speed that allows one to stop in the distance you can see...

That is horrible and sends chills all over. When I was a young lad I had just literally minutes before picked up my Ninja from the shop (after all repairs were made from getting sideswiped on the freeway and spending two months in leg casts) and was riding it along when a lady with a crying baby in a carseat pulled her big car to the right and out of the lane (no blinker). Once she was clear I started to roll on by quickly only to have her crank it full left and step on the gas for a lightning fast surprise U-turn. I slacked up as she hit me and I bounced off her door as she drove over the bike pinning it under her driver's side. I really could not believe what had just happened. To make it even better and contrary to everything about the accident and witnesses, she told her insurance that I t-boned her while she was backing out of a parking spot. Yes U-turners suck.

Not as easy as that. It happened on a straight where the riders had a clear view of the road ahead...

Google Maps view looking south on SR-1 in Monterey County north of Garrapata Creek Bridge, which is seen in the distance

So they could see probably the vehicle on the right shoulder but didn't know it was going to pull out. Maybe it had a drug-dealer window tint so they couldn't see that it was occupied. Maybe its brake lights were obscured by other vehicles or peds.

RIP. :rose

RIP rider. Hope you in a better place and hope your family finds peace.

I can remember taking bicycle camping trips on Hwy 1 between SLO to SF back in the early 80's and as I remember, it seemed deserted compared to nowadays. I took my MC down Hwy 1 to an AirBNB house in Caucus we rented for a family reunion last fall and I was shocked at how loooong it took to go from Big Sur on and how many times some idiot cager tried to kill me. Never again.

+1 on brake lights. also watch for anyone in the drivers seat of the "parked" car on the shoulder, double so on scenic roads: if there's somebody there assume they'll get on the road right in front of you

In addition to brake lights, the quick flash of backup lights indicates that the car has just pulled the trans into drive.

My last closest call was from a u-turner. I had been following him for over 3 miles, not far behind him along a windy back road. He pulls to the side, much like many people have done to let me past, then as I'm going past him he starts coming around on me fast. I was on my R1 and gave full gas and he missed me by less than a foot! I know he had seen me earlier because he had looked right at me in his rearview several times while I was behind him.

NYE 2016 I got taken out the same way on Mines Road, Chevy 2500 series driver pulled right to apparently let me pass, instead to make an unsignaled sharp left into a driveway.

Not if the transmission was never put into park. Watch for the brake lights.
