Friendly Reminder....Check your mirrors

I was coming back from the San Gregorio on 84 yesterday when a came up on a slower rider. First thing I noticed was bar end mirrors and they didn’t seem adjusted properly. No biggie.

I stayed behind a bit to see if I would get a way bye. I really don’t like to pass another rider unless they know I’m there......so I’ll ride in their mirrors, waiting to see what they do and see how they are riding.

This rider was pretty much all over the places in terms of lines through corners, overbraking for some turns when not needed......pretty shakey in holding lines through the turns....patterns of a new rider.

Because of where I caught him, how he was riding and the amount of downhill traffic.......I choose to wait for a way bye in order not to spook him by passing and him not know I was there.....so I stayed put behind him.....slow erratic riding and all........it was the safest thing to do.

I was there a long time..........all of a sudden in a left, he stands the bike up, slows quickly and pulls over to the right.......he appeared startled that I was there......he finally checked his mirrors.

On by I went........I noticed as I pulled into the store at Sky Londa, he was behind me and followed me to the tree spot. So, what was up? We got the helmets off, he was quiet, young kid on a new speed triple.

Since he was a newbie to riding, I expressed, in a calm, friendly manner, the importance of checking your mirrors up in the hills.....that there is always someone faster than you and might not be as nice as I was.

He admitted he was in his own little world......thinking he was alone on the road.......and he apologized for next checking his mirrors. He has only been riding a year....which I don’t know how many miles that would be.....but confirmed my assetment of his riding while behind him.

We had a nice chat, and hopefully he’ll remember to check his mirrors more.......

Your gentle manner will have a long lasting effect on the young rider. And when he becomes an experienced rider, he will be gentle with the new kids ;-)

Most riders are not hot on their mirrors in the twisties, but once a a short straight should check their six.

Stopped on a two lane road, waiting for traffic. Looked in my mirror and saw a diesel truck without a trailer closing a little faster than was comfortable. Then, I saw the blue smoke rolling off of his drivers as he hit the brakes hard. I gassed it and went straight. It pays to watch your six.
