Apologies if this has already been discussed but I'm on the fence about it since I'm afraid some applications I have been using might not work after the upgrade.

Thoughts?

I think you should, especially as there's the option to revert back if it does not work out for you. This is clearly the future for Microsoft.

Or consider upgrading into a virtual machine which leaves open the option of using another OS like Linux as your primary desktop. I'll PM some info to you about that.

How old is the system you want to upgrade? What is your patience/tolerance/attitude for spending a lot of time on this? (If it goes badly)

Personally, I don't see much of an improvement or reason to go to Windows 10. But if you find this a fun and interesting type of thing to do, and your system isn't that old, then it might be a fun-ish thing to do.

I have Windows 10 running on several very old systems, including an 8 year old Dell Mini netbook. Any vaguely modern system will run it fine.

If you are running XP (!!!) you will die of shock.
If you are running Windows 7 it will be educational.
If you are running Windows 8 and somehow miss 7 or XP you might enjoy the reversion in the Start bar/home screen stuff.

Performance should be a fraction better skipping from 7 or 8 to 10, but us mere mortals never really see that.
