NBCnews.com: Treasure chest worth millions found in the Rocky Mountains after decade-long search

Somebody made good use of social distancing. There have been several TV shows, YouTube videos and articles published about this treasure hidden ten years ago by an art dealer from New Mexico named Forrest Fenn. He wrote a memoir with several vague clues as to the location of the treasure. At least three people died looking for the treasure which consisted of "a 13th-century Romanesque bronze chest, was hidden between 2009 and 2010 with an estimated $2 million of gold, jewelry and gems." The 89 year-old Fenn confirmed on Sunday that the treasure had been found recently. No details about who found the treasure or exactly where it had been hidden have been released yet.

Note on the website of Fenn's gallery:

The search is over!

Forrest has confirmed that the treasure has been found. “It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago. I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot. I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the search and hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries. So the search is over. Look for more information and photos in the coming days”

I think that Josh Gates guy was looking for that and had a couple of shows. Nice diversion and I like the rationale. I guess it was sort of around the time of geocaching or something.

I remember reading that poem when it first came out and just thought, "hell that could be anywhere."

Really curious as where it was and how the finder used the clues to get there but I'm guessing that's not forthcoming.

I'm sure there will be some follow-up show about it. But at 89, this ain't gonna happen again by him. he sure made his name for the hiding, though.

Fenn said the finder was "shy". Which to me is code for "I don't want my wife to know I got the gold" so I don't think that guy will be doing any interviews.

This is the lamest reveal. Completely unsatisfying ending to the search.

Shy Man can send photos anonymously. Fenn can reveal the location. Fenn can explain the poem and the clues.

Having it quietly slip in to the night? Nope, just not right at all.

Apparently the guy who found it has been ID’d

I often went to the Fenn Gallery in Santa Fe many years ago as a kid. It was like an art museum where the art was for sale. I dont know what its like now, but then it was rooms and corridors and hallways filled with amazing stuff, expensive amazing stuff. I always loved the New Mexico style of art, but you cant really bring it home to Ohio, NY, or Chicago and have it fit in well. To me it needs New Mexico to work.

Yeah he did... Gates fan here.
Solid fun, humor and history...I am amazed how entertaining his Josh Gates Tonight (Covid show) is. Plus he starts with a cocktail..:laughing

I am a total :nerd when it comes to that sort of stuff.

I think an explanation of the clues would be cool for sure.

I am too, but most notably, I am a complete sucker for Curse of Oak Island.

Mind, I've always been a sucker for that story.

It certainly goes off the rails, I'd like to shove narrator in to a freezer for a few hours, but they keep digging up just crazy stuff.

Best show on TV for me.

His name is Robert Clotworthy. His life could be summed up in a giant question mark. This show and the Alien thing. Everything is a question.

I don't think I will live long enough for them ever to milk that thing dry. I just wish the f3ck they would find it or not. Now they got spin offs about Japanese war gold but I just cannot get engaged in yet another.

I'm fairly embarassed that I even watch that thing so thanks for a bit of validation. I just want to know what vast wealth those Lagina boys have to draw on to pay for all that excavation. Jaysus the equipment they have hauled on to that cursed little joint..

"A wooden stick? In the mud? Could these a lost axe handle of Templar soldiers?"

Yea, he drives me nuts.

I've watched a couple of shows, most get nowhere very fast. It's all supposes and coulda and maybe, but no actual progress.

These guys, though, they keep digging stuff up. This project has a huge backstory of hunters, so, they keep locating old digs and what not, but they also find stuff that simply should not be there. Stuff that you can take at face value and not listen to their interpretation.

It's funny, because in the beginning they were cost conscious. Now, they clearly don't talk about it much.

I'm assuming that the revenue from the show is funding the work, at least partially, now. They should be getting some return from it, and that's kind of the best of both worlds.

At the end of this season, they talked about how they would basically dig out the whole thing, how it was be a zillion dollars, how it would be 2-3 years of work.

But, they're thinking about it. Not just drilling holes, but essentially open pit mining the thing. So, seems like, if far off, they're determined, and there may be some kind of actual end in sight.

Yeah. Ancient Aliens. THe best way to watch that show is when the F@ck That's Delicious Guys have a watch party. Actually, srsly, no I cannot watch the Aliens thing but yeah, that's the guy.

Oh, and the other thing about Oak Island is when the guys find something or tell the other guy they found something, they do these double takes complete with serious music. It's so frickin lame, yet watch it I do. And another fun fact, Gary Drayton has the most obnoxious accent on Planet Earth.

:laughing

I watch Ancient Aliens.. :p

So much if it is historical stuff if you can get past the crazy dudes hair and the dramatic and corny "what if's".

I find some old historical sites and stuff that I might have missed otherwise. Gives me a chance to look them up and learn a bit more about them.

If this guy is right, he”s gonna be kicking himself for years.

https://billingsgazette.com/lifesty...cle_0e89ac6f-82e5-511a-9b79-721e48c918dd.html

About 10 years ago I threw away a lottery ticket because it said “please see retailer” when I scanned it at the kiosk. Who has time for that? Come to find out years later that that message only comes up if your tickets was worth more than $600. Been kicking myself ever since.

From the article:
“You might call me a lunatic, whatever, but I feel wholeheartedly I solved that Fenn treasure thing,” Christensen told U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Carman during a March 16 teleconference, according to a Powell Tribune story. “I still feel it’s down there, your honor.”

McFarland is just as certain his solution is the right one.

That's how these always are. The solution is perfect until proved otherwise.

Still waiting for some verification and explanation from the author/finder.
