Fiverr - wut?

OK, I'm getting desperate for some reasonably priced design/art work. Some is logo, some is illustration, typography design, blah blah, the usual graphics design stuff.

So I'm poking around Fiverr and see some decent work, I send a few messages - proposals to artists/designer types in Fiverrland, and get back about 30% response rate. Some have no language/writing skills at all, reading replies is like deciphering some ancient tablet or scrolls. Really frustrating.

A couple are on it, good positive response for a music thing we need, but in general, on the graphics design and illustration work side, meh, pretty lackluster. It's certainly not big agency quality, but yet I have a smallish budget that could afford reasonable bids not to crazy. This was all spelled out in the query notes.

I'm starting to think that people just aren't that hungry for work, or I need to find some other avenues. I put a thing here on teh barf a while ago, got nothing. Maybe CL gigs next? Who knows.

What say the barf magic eight ball? If you had a new biz project, smallish budget and needed original art/graphic design for a multitude of mediums, where would you go look for talent?

I would like to know, as well. It frustrates me that I'm good with a camera, but useless with DIY design. Seems like there should be some sort of crossover talent, but clearly there is not.

I'd bet Abyss knows some folks. I know some folks but they're higher end corporate types.

Aleks at Moto Shop is a very talented designer; she knows motorcycles and she knows more junior people.
You could try academy of art or similar; I'm sure they'd put a flier up or refer you one of their more talented students directly.

As with anything else, you'll generally get what you pay for, and if you think hiring a professional is expensive, just wait until you've tried an amateur.

I had never heard of Fiverr before reading this thread. Can't say I'm very impressed. I clicked on Ebook covers because I will eventually have a need for one. I was met with, "Find the best service, that's just right for you." Really? Will it also come with a comma splice? Or are they reserved for just Fiverr?

so you're looking for someone with the wisdom of a 50-year old, the experience of a 40-year old, the drive of a 30-year old, and the pay scale of a 20-year old.

I would wager and say that your version of reasonably priced is not the market's version of reasonably priced.

:laughing Well said. I love it when people hire someone for pennies on the dollar from one of these sites and then bitch about the quality/lack of market/target culture/etc... It kills me that people can think that they will get a quality product by outsourcing at 3rd world wages, whatever the project may be.

what is reasonably priced? post straigjt up, what you expect to pay for anw what, ill let uou kow if its even in the ball park. my guess, based on your posting style and themes on here, is that is emphatically not.

Lets think here what you are asking for:

you want a creative and artistic person (rare), in a style you like (rare) who is well versed in multiple mediums (very rare) and to creative something specifically for you (hard)/

that is not something that will be cheap, or easy to find.

go to deviant art, start looking around. find a smattering of people whos work you like and start sending emails.

this is what happens when they kill all art in schools and as a society we constantly make fun of people who pursue it.

Its also what happens when sites like fiverr and their lot attempt to commodify creativity.

I wouldn't assume that. I went to Fiverr and clearly stated in my inquiries to Designers I looked at that this was a bigger gig, but wanted to see if they'd be willing to use Fiverr as a launching platform. Again, I've posted in forums and other places like CL and haven't had very much of a response at all. At least at Fiverr, artists are (starting to) respond. I'm casting a fairly wide net though.

Get a referral for someone local and pay a fair price for it.
:x

Great, send me a list of referrals then. :thumbup

I'd like to just get someone to respond. Fiverr was a last resort, but at least they are somewhat responding and two now (as of today) are doing some comp ideas for the Fiverr rate they are asking. They know if it matches what I want, I will give them more gig's, that was stated up front. You got better referrals, well, lets hear it!
