so i just got the dirt trail bug, went to hollister hills last weekend and now im hooked.
im looking at a couple different "beater" bikes to have rough fun with so that i dont mess up my plated klx while im just trying to learn the basics.

the main question is i have though is for gear, what i should and shouldnt get.

i currently have my helmet, gloves, goggles, and some knee pads. i was going to buy some boots, but with the different price variations, and a couple previous ankle injuries, i think i should get something a little better. any suggestions on what i should buy next? im really only doing some simple trails and such

Dont pay full price. Motorcycle Superstore and Cycle gear have closeouts all the time.

........Dont buy cheap gear. Look at the close outs for the pants that are normally price near $180 a pair and pay $80ish.
The expensive pants are worth it and they have the protection in all the right places.
Shirts get what ever.
Chest protector, get soemthing that is comfortable on a bike and make sure its not loose.
Boots, spend alot on boots. and stay away from the sneaker type soles, stick with the old school flat soles they last a lot longer.

i bought a used chest protector of craigslist.

i know i need some good pants, burnt a hole through my buddys fox pants since i dont have a heat shield for my bike (cant seem to find one either, peep bike under screen name))

and what brands of boots and how much should i be spending?

im a size 12 in boots, 34-36 waist and large jersey.

That Looks About Right
Try them on first. I ended up with gaerne sg10s because they fit so well. Huge difference for me vs the alpinestars and fox boots. I was super reluctant to spend the dough, but the nice boots really do last longer.

"i wanna go fast"
agree with the above. i too need better boots, mx specific ones.

i highly highly recommend elbow and forearm protection. Stupid low speed falls and slips will skin your forearm. I bought a vest with chest back shoulder elbow and forearm protection. One thing is impact, the other thing is an open wound.

Some people are bothered by the elbow guards. To be honest i'm rocking a FOX vest with a random shirt over it. Once i got on the bike i forgot it even had it on. First time i rode i skinned my left forearm.. i was trying to follow Ben up there.

Lever/hand guards. Had a low speed slip also on my first ride, 20min in, that broke my clutch lever. (thanks Ben for lending me one jaja)

AND to address the "beater" bike. I made the mistake of buying a $125 basket case from 1986. 40hours and $1,250 later i have a rideable bike. If i had to do it again i would have spent $1500 on a running bike 15years newer with a bunch of new *** in the engine that i could go ride the next day :thumbup

I have found that most "chest protectors" are just roost guards and offer little in the way of real protection. Thor, Alpinestars, Leatt, and others make compression shirts/vests that have rib protection, elbow/forearm, shoulder, and back/kidney armor and offer a bit more protection than most roost guard type chest protectors I've seen. I had a fox airframe that wasn't very protective and felt cheap and flimsy. The armored shirts/vests are a bit more pricey than a roost guard, but seem to offer more protection. Just my .02.
