First ever Moto Race at 61

I'm probably doing it wrong but I recently turned 61 and have been running track days since I started riding bikes 11 years ago and I decided there was an itch that needed scratching :)

So I attended a 2 day race camp with the most excellent folks at California Superbike School last week (10/22 & 23).

The event was at Streets of Willow Springs and with all things CSS was very well organized and managed.

They run a race day format - FP1, FP2, FP3, Qualifying and the the Race. There are race specific drills (standing starts, passing, corner exit speed, high, mid and low corner lines) all with a dedicated race coach shared between just 2 riders.

Johnny was my coach and he did a fantastic job of getting me up to speed on a track I had never ridden or seen before. All the coaches have video and all the bikes are fitted with transponders - so there is lots of data to analyse after each session on track.

There were 18 racers and 9 coaches on track so it made for plenty of action.
I chose to run my own bike, but most used the BMW S1000RR's that CSS provide.

During Day 1, I worked my way down from 1:38's/lap to 1:28's, qualified 9th and finished 4th in the race. The standing start was one of the most intense experiences I have ever had!!

Day 2 was the same format, I dropped a bit more time off and qualified 4th on the grid. Unfortunately, the second race was red-flagged early on because of gravel and fluids on the track.

It was an amazing experience and I was still pumped when I go home after the 5 1/2 hr drive home.

So overall it rate this an A++ experience and recommend it to anybody who is looking for a curated/coached entry into moto racing. I plan to be back for more next year. :thumbup

Oh and I got a gong for 2nd in class

Sounds like you had an awesome time.
The Streets of Willow are an awesome place to go catch some high revs.
Thanks for sharing! :thumbup!

Huge thumbs up to OP for living a dream, especially at 61! :thumbup

I've always thought that you can live in fear or live for real.

Yes it was pretty amazing. On the way there my expectations/hope was not to embarrass myself by crashing out or coming dead last.

I was also worried about having the stamina for two full days of racing - since one full day at Thunderhill is pretty tiring.

As it turned out, I was faster on Day 2 probably because I was pumped full of adrenaline from Day 1.

Short video of the sighting lap and start.

I used launch control for the first time but couldn't help backing off the gas as I let the clutch out so bogged the motor. I was also super tentative into T1 and T2 so dropped a long way back in the pack. My primary goal was to finish the race without incident - well its was until the red mist descended :teeth :ride

My GoPro's battery crapped out so I don't have much video of the actual race, which is annoying as I fought all the way back to 4th and was chasing down 3rd at the finish.

You'll notice that the CSS instructors are on track with us - to film us and get coaching points. It also adds perspective as to just how much faster former pro-racers are :wow :laughing

Very cool! Congrats!
Getting into sport bikes and track days a little later than most myself (19 years street riding standards/cruisers before SB's 10 years ago) this makes me feel better about going out there and enjoying it as I'm now in my mid 40's!

Its Dethklok!
Way to go! I always remember the start of a race as like charging into battle and as long as you made it through the first two turns things got a little less intense and the blood pressure came down a bit.:thumbup
