Fire at Carnegie

253 acres at the West end of the Park, looks like Watertower hill and up. Investigation of the fire is pending, maybe they'll find out it was Connally after he lost 3-5 lawsuits....

Totally sucks, just one more nail in the coffin of local riding areas.

Not sure if this link will work, but a guy riding apparently found hot smoldering embers in the grass while riding: https://www.facebook.com/pete.krunich/videos/10223136450181620/

edit - just realized this was filmed two weeks ago

I was out there last Friday and when we were talking to the Rangers this story was brought up as there was a fire in the median of 580 east of Livermore that morning. They investigated after the reported hot embers and found there was no recent fire or smoldering embers but that they were looking into the matter further.

Hard to tell from a video and not actually seeing the scene but, to me, it looks like those pieces of char were there from a previous fire. Probably part of the fence that he mentions in the video. I saw zero fire extension from the pieces and he’s handling them all with an ungloved hand so they can’t be actively burning. Again, just my thoughts after watching a video but I think those are just remnants that were mopped up from an earlier fire. It looked like the grass had grown up around them to me. My .02

I got my text on Friday from the rangers updating riding conditions which is normal.
The text mentioned the park was closed "pending investigation" which is not normal.

A few days ago there was a fire within the park. It situated around the hill west of the Corral Climb trail

Update as of 12:30pm 7/23/20:

I just spoke with a ranger by telephone. Here is what she said...

The MX tracks and 4X4 area are open, however all hills are still closed. Crews are working to cordon off the fire areas in the hills. They expect to have the eastern most trails (Red Tail, Golden Eagle, SRI Loop, Black Bear) open by this afternoon or tomorrow. These will be one-way in/out (I assume from the bottom near the MX track), with a closure near the top of Black Bear.

The ranger did not have an estimate on when additional trails would open up, except that crews are working to make that happen asap.

Has anyone been back out to "Charnegie recently?
Texts from the rangers have been quiet and vague. Are all or most of the usual trails open or are they still investigating and repairing?

Wondering the same thing. Would love to know what "parts of Los Osos" trail are still open. Is Red Tail trail accessible, etc.

Results are in. It was an electrical fire from a bird.

Time to rename the trail to "Firebird trail".

I've seen it once before with a grown bald eagle in the sierra foothills

Damn Butch.
That link talks about a lot of the park.
I'm really interested in your report if you're headed out there.

Looks like about 50% of the park... although you could still make a few good loops with what remains open. Looks like Happiness Valley is still open to connect West / East, so that is a plus:ride

@Butch, I might try to join if you're there on Wednesday.:thumbup

Here is your Wednesday 8/5/2020 Carnegie UPDATE:

First I have to say that it was a great morning to ride. Temperatures in the 70s. Windy on top of the ridges, but otherwise just light breeze. The park was almost empty, so my daughter and I were often the only ones on the trails.

The map in my last post ^^^ (and in the link that Butch posted) is very accurate. On the west side, Pottery Loop is essentially closed. Further up into the hills, most of Franciscan Loop is closed. There is one short section of Franciscan Loop from Clear Pond Trail up to Brewer's Trail that is open. The bottom of Pottery Loop is closed, so to access to the west hills is from Juniper. Dead Cow Canyon is open and the trails above (Dead Snake, Dead Pig, Dead Bird, Brewer's, Stove Pipe, Bobcat, etc.) are all open.

Happiness Valley is still the happiest trail for connecting west / east.

Much of the middle of the park is still closed (not fire related) so review the map.

On the east end of the park, SRI trail from the MX track up to Golden Eagle and RedTail is all open. Black Bear is open and will get you up to the top of Ridge Trail and Los Osos. A small section of Ridge Trail is open.

Bunkhouse is closed, but the new trails just west of Bunkhouse are all open.

Overall I'd say about 40 percent of the park is closed, but I was still able to string together some fun loops with mixture of blue squares and black diamonds. For folks that prefer the green circle and maintenance roads, it is more limiting.

I did see heavy equipment cutting some new wide trails (maintenance roads?) from the hill climb area over to Juniper Trail. So not sure what that will eventually be?

Anyway, for a weekday it was very fun and didn't need to worry about crowded trials. I'm not sure what the weekends will be like with limited trails. It will be especially interesting to see what happens in the fall if they don't re-open some of the closed areas.

That's all I have for now.

I wanted to get out on this beautiful day but got stuck home with chores. Cooked a bunch, windows open, it was a productive day.
Maybe Friday. Metcalf is much closer and I know the washboards better..

It seems much of the singletrack I like is still open.

I received a text from Char-negie this morning stating it will be "closed until further notice due to a wildfire burning south of the park".
