Not-quite retired Army
Well, Wednesday night it finally happened, I collided with a car and dropped the K1200R.
I wasn't running my Contour camera because the mount cracked, so no evidence. I was riding NB 880 above Fremont and had finished splitting a large clot of cars, and rolling up on another at about 25-30 mph.
I remember seeing a gray-brown sedan as the closest car, riding in the #1 lane, and that's the last thing I remember until the EMTs were moving my right leg to get the bike off my left leg, then removing my helmet. They helped me get up and helped me to the ambulance where they checked me out, physically and mentally, and cleared me as ok. Yes, I refused transport, even talked to an MD over the phone and got him to say ok. :laughing
Witnesses: driver of the car I collided with and VERY nice lady who parked her car behind me and blocked traffic until the bike and I were off the road. She deserves flowers.
I gave the CHP officer my insurance and registration, he said he'd wait for a bit to make sure I and the bike were both ok, and as soon as I started checking out the bike for functionality, he split. :laughing
I thoroughly checked out the bike and it was perfectly rideable, which delighted me enormously. No front-end damage, no gas leakage, no frame damage that is visible. Further inspection is required, but I was able to ride the bike home and it felt perfectly normal (to my slightly joggled brain, anyway).
Damage to the car: softball-sized dent at the right rear bumper, seemingly centered at the corner. Driver was nice.
Damage to the bike:
1) lens cover to the left-front turn signal missing
2) scrape to clutch lever, bar-end mirror, and crash guard (which totally paid for itself, thanks very much)
3) bracket to left Clearwater Light bent to almost 90 degrees ($46 +$7S&H)
Got home, felt ok until a few hours later, when the adrenaline & shock wore off and I started to feel the effects of the crash. I knew my ankle was hurting as it was trapped under the bike and had lost some skin on the inside ankle bone, and finally went to the ER. Got a CT scan of the skull and Xrays of the ribcage, left middle finger, and left ankle.
My skull's ok, my middle fingers are fully capable (See? ), and my ankle is just bruised. My ribs, on the other hand, are nicely fractured. Yup, I've broken a long string, last broken/chipped bone was 30-some years ago, when I chipped a knucklebone playing volleyball. I'm shocked, I tell ya, shocked. :laughing
A few weeks eating ibuprophen like candy and I'll be fine. arty
Yeah, yeah, tl/dr. :laughing
