Fence Recommendation?

Looking to get @120ft of fence replaced in the next month or so. Anyone have any referrals? Also, we've had radio silence from 1 neighbor, CA law seems to indicate they're responsible for 1/2 the cost on a property-line fence. Will I just have to take them to court if they refuse to respond?

I know I'd be very welcoming of a neighbor that sued me for not spending money that I didn't budget for, or have.

That being said, I'm looking at about 5 to 7 grand worth of fence work and I'm going to assume it's all on me, because I'm the one that wants a new fence.
If they can help with their half that's great. If not, I'll still have cool neighbors and slightly less money in my account.

Just go talk to them face to face if you can?
Is it possible they are hard up for money due to the 'rona? Homeowner's insurance covered our fence last time we had it repaired and the neighbor's covered their portion as well. When the appraiser visited he suggested we get the roof redone as well. Covered...less deductible of course. Now we are talking to them about changing the old galvanized pipes out. Who'da thunk it? Never realized how valuable homeowner's insurance was.

Just had my back yard fence replaced (75 feet) by Ergeon Inc. after waiting for almost four months since the February Wind storm. Construction was limited by the lockdown and too many down fences I guess. Very happy with it and reasonable price. Call Oscar @ 650-249-2933.

I just built (Ok, almost done) a fence between me and my 80 y/o neighbor's house. Any time I used a nail gun or chop saw he'd spring into action and come out and watch me. Like every scoop of cement that went into a hole, he checked. I stayed on my best behavior but man it's been tough. Building a fence in the hot sun, trying to teach my kids who know very little how to do it and Jack watching was taxing on my nerves to say the least.

We split the cost and I handled the labor. Around 2k for 60ft vs 5k +/-

Finding fencing lumber (Mostly the fence boards) was very difficult BTW.

You could go talk to them or...

you need to serve your neighbor with "notice of intent to alter shared boundary fence" 30 days before construction begins. Certified mail is fine.

good luck. having neighbors that hate you is fun

Was told this when I got my one of the quotes. Prices are going up on the materials due to limited availability.

People have money and are spending a lot of it on fences, apparently. :laughing

Yup. I put mine off for years and now I wish I had done it sooner. The fence boards weer not only the hardest to find, they were at least half the cost of the build.

I'm probably gonna bite the bullet and pay to have most of it done. I know I can build a fence but I can't guarantee how many years it'd last in our little wind tunnel.

Also, I'm in the middle of tearing the backyard down to dirt so I can install a sprinkler system and a lawn. Not sure I have a week of fence-building in me any more. :laughing :afm199

Radio silence = I sent them a friendly letter and they actively avoid me when ever outside. They're the new neighbors. I have a feeling its cultural. I'm not just going to throw up a new fence then drop a suit in their box....

what i really want to know is why wood posts in the ground+concrete is still State Of The Art for fencing. I don't care if it's pressure treated that shit still rots out in 10 years. the stretchers and boards are easy to replace as needed over the decades, if the posts would just stay longer fer chrissakes.

my fencing needs attention as well, and one of the property lines i'm sure is OFF because my 50 foot wide back yard only measures 49... not looking for ward to any of it (neighbors are cool, doubt it'll be a problem, still annoying)

using expanding foam is on the "maybe" list. allegedly it seals the bottom of the post thus helping with the rot thing

Good luck with the neighbor. Try to work something our before you do the work, it can be messy. My old home the neighbor wanted to do the fence. He got 3 bids and I looked at what he wanted F@#ing copper caps and trim. I got a bid under $2K, told the neighbor I would put in $1K and gave him a check for it. Added note to the check, 1/2 the total cost. He said that was fine. A month later the fence contractor stopped by with a bill for $1200 more. I said WTF, the contractor said the price went up and Mr Brown said that was fine. I told him to go see Mr. Brown as I did not sign any contract. It ended there but Mr Brown was never neighborly.

Edit my daughter got a new fence and they used pipe posts in cement. Cross boards fastened with straps and screws.

After trying unsuccessfully for years to contact my back neighbor, I decided to just replace the back fence and had it installed just inside my property line and left the existing shitty fence there. I had steel posts put in and paid just shy of $2K for approx. 60' of fence and removal of a metal dogrun. (It would have been about $1700 for just the fence.) I'm in Sac though.

Fricking fences, so much potential for bad blood between neighbors, it shouldn't be, but a good number of neighbors will have a different idea than their border neighbor.

Fortunately, I have two that are decent and one that I haven't talked to yet (back, not side) who has a dog that is always barking starting at 7:00 am and it's got very strong vocals) who might be a problem and that fence needs to be replaced within the next year. Looks like another year not confronting him about his stupid dog, but after that....

I've already got the details worked out, with a post hole driller and a nail gun I can get it done in a weekend. About 60 feet.

There's no way put a second fence on the silent neighbor's side, it's on a raised cement base between our side walkways, and runs next to my shed.

These people also reported abandoned cars in front of their house after 1 day like 2 weeks after they moved in. I sent a letter and texted them, as I have their phone # because they asked me to return a ball their kid sent over. Still crickets on the fence that is going to fall over the next big windstorm, I could probably push it over now.

FLCL?
Maybe just wait for that?

I just went through it. I had to do all the work of sourcing contractor(s), but at least all three neighbors were cool about fixing/replacing various fences.

Yeah they got back to me, they "didn't realize it was so broken" even though it looks like a flag in the wind. They don't want to put anything into the house so it looks like it'll be repair only on their side...
