SANTA CRUZ -- Highway 1 north of Santa Cruz was closed in both directions for several hours on Sunday after a fatal accident involving a suspected drunk driver.
The crash happened just before 2 p.m. about a mile south of Davenport, near Scaroni Road, when a Honda van traveling south crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a motorcyclist head-on, the California Highway Patrol said. The van then struck a car traveling behind the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist died at the scene, CHP Sgt. Nick Ozanne said.
The female driver of the van was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, Ozanne said.
Two male passengers in the van, who appeared to be sharing the front seat, were flown to Stanford Hospital and Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Cal Fire Capt. Bill Tomkovic said.
The motorcyclist's wife was driving behind him in a black BMW with their infant baby, Tomkovic said. Both were taken to Dominican Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
A half-pound of marijuana was found on the side of the road next to the accident, Tomkovic said.:wtf
