This is exactly why there should be very harsh penalties for causing a serious accident while driving drunk!

Agreed:thumbup
But I think also, there should be even harsher penalties and more enforcement for DUIs BEFORE they kill someone.. Why can't people stop drinking and driving.. We need more effective education to drivers about drinking and driving, and better programs which will help intoxicated drivers get home without driving.. Such a waste of a life because someone wanted to get a little drunk, and then needed to get somewhere :thumbdown

SANTA CRUZ -- Highway 1 north of Santa Cruz was closed in both directions for several hours on Sunday after a fatal accident involving a suspected drunk driver.

The crash happened just before 2 p.m. about a mile south of Davenport, near Scaroni Road, when a Honda van traveling south crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a motorcyclist head-on, the California Highway Patrol said. The van then struck a car traveling behind the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist died at the scene, CHP Sgt. Nick Ozanne said.

The female driver of the van was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, Ozanne said.

Two male passengers in the van, who appeared to be sharing the front seat, were flown to Stanford Hospital and Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Cal Fire Capt. Bill Tomkovic said.

The motorcyclist's wife was driving behind him in a black BMW with their infant baby, Tomkovic said. Both were taken to Dominican Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

A half-pound of marijuana was found on the side of the road next to the accident, Tomkovic said.

No additional information was available Sunday night.

Under the influence could mean she was stoned and not necessarily drunk. Still, impaired is impaired so I hope she does a looooong stretch in prison.

I don't think that's what happened- maybe I got it wrong..
You got it wrong... that black car in the picture is a black BMW and that was his wife's car.

Stoned and/or drunk, clearly she was unfit to be driving and chose to drive. Somebody died as a result of that decision and she should face very harsh penalties.
