Engine stalls periodically at stops

My SP3 has been in the shop 3 times for this issue.

When coming to a stop, the engine stalls maybe 10% of the time very soon after coming to a stop. It’s often enough every time I’m about to stop, I’m expecting a stall. If I sit there long enough, sometimes it stalls.

Is this normal engine behavior or do I have a lemon? I don’t think it’s safe to have engine stalls.

I can handle very infrequent stalls. My 08 SV560 stalled 4 times over 1.5 years/4,000 miles. This Triumph stalls about 5 times on a normal 1 hour ride mixed highway and city, wirh cool weather and the engine not overheating.

For a 2019 fuel injected bike - no it should not be doing that. My Street Triple is rock solid at idle. I don't think it has ever stalled. What does the shop say when you bring it in?

The dealership. This last time they said they did a computer update and a test ride.

I have a '18 Street and about 5 times over the last 2 years it has stalled when coming to a quick stop. I noticed it happened when I'm on the throttle at moderate RPM (7k+) and have to brake quickly. I think when it has happened it is when I pull in the clutch before releasing the throttle all the way. The RPMs jump a little and then it stalls.

Whatever that means
Could be low idle setting, could be vacuum pressure, tps sensor may need calibration or replacement, could be tight valves.

As a former dealer tech this kills me. I can't believe how some people start from here.
Yes, you have a lemon, 100% for sure. Start filling out the paperwork immediately. They will deliver your new bike shortly.

My 2012 Tiger did that too. Between me and the previous owner, it probably spent 3 months in the shop just for that one issue. I had to keep the throttle partially open at all times, which was really fun in city traffic.

So I got rid of it.

There is a known flaw in the throttle bodies on the newest version of the Hypermotard (i know different bike) which causes a similar problem. From what i read it is some type of anti corrosion coating in the throttle bodies. Once cleaned they have had success. Just a thought.

Last night I took it out, and most of the time it stalls about 3-5 seconds after coming to a stop. I always keep it in gear when coming to a stop but I tried coasting I’m Neutral and the bike stalled while coasting.

I agree. And get your dealer tech guy behind you but he knows and I betcha has already started documenting it. You need three good faith attempts with your dealer then start the process. Damn though! The new Speed Triple? So lustworthy....keep me informed please.😁

I won’t be getting another Triumph for a while.

Thanks for thoughts. Had no clue about that ever being a cause.

One of the 4 shops to which I took my Tiger did that, and it seemed to help, but only for a couple of weeks.

My Tiger also had a hot-starting problem. If the engine was hot, e.g. after I was done filling up at a gas station, it would often refuse to start, so I’d have to wait a few minutes before I could get on my way. Combined with the stalling issue, this made every ride an exciting adventure! Maybe that’s what qualifies the Tiger as an “adventure bike.”

I did have the starter replaced (it took a month for the part to arrive at Cal Moto, and this was way before COVID), but the problem persisted for another 3 years.

I think gixxerjeff was being sarcastic? Like a guy that has an issue, maybe some sensor or TPS adjustment needed and their first thoughts are lemon law.

But I think we have a bad situation in the moto world these days. Bikes have gotten more complex, mechanics seem to be young/inexperienced, dealers don't seem to care much about customer service.

So a modern complex motorcycle has an issue that might require some clever, smart, experienced mechanic'ing to sort out. But such mechanics are hard to find. So customer rightfully gets tired of bringing his bike in, having it in the shop multiple times with no fix, goes the lemon law route and gets his money back.

Can't blame the customer. This is dangerous! And really no reason this should be happening. And if a dealer is so incompetent and/or uncaring about this problem, then they deserve to have to do that buy-back.

Thanks everyone, found this issue on a Triumph forum. Looks like Triumph might have a computer update next month....

"Regarding the stalling you have experience, the factory are in the process of releasing a new ecm calibration tune that should improve the running of your bike and reduce the likelihood of future stalling. As soon as the updated tune has been released, Newcastle Triumph will be able to install this into your bike for you under warranty. The anticipate availability of this new tune is early September."

That's for a Street Triple and you have a Speed Triple right, or did I miss something?

Have a low-mileage ‘14 Street Triple and thankfully haven’t experienced your problem. But it’s a 675 motor and less electronics than the ‘17 and ups.
I read a bit of the TriumphRat forum and a search shows that a LOT of models have had this problem.

Saw several diagnoses but two free fixes were found by doing the 20 minute adaption reset or by not letting the gas level get below half. Correlation or causation, I don’t know.

But for your NEW Speedy? I’d be down at the dealer every time it did this. Get your lemon-law info and don’t take NO for an answer.

Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Lemon. Run, do not look back.

( I have a ‘13 speed triple, no idle issues, hot or cold. It has never died on me).

On my Daytona I was experiencing something similar. On deceleration for a stop it would stall on occasion. Turned out to be a bad alternator.
